Are you the only or the first deaf person in ur entire family?

My DS is the the only hoh in either family except for grandma & greatgrandma who have age-related hearing loss. (Well, I think I'm losing my hearing, but I haven't been tested yet. So maybe there will be two of us.)

    corded ear gear

My son has corded ear gear. We don't like them because he is little, the covers are a bit big for the HAs, and the excess fabric bunches up behind his little ears. We have two pairs. I will hang onto one pair, just in case If anyone wants a pair of baby blue Ear Gear that fits something...

Question abt "My Deaf Family" Show.

I voted! I would *like* to see a family on tv that doesn't have a lot of drama. I find other people's everyday life interesting enough.

    How will I know?

First off, my signing ability is about that of a toddler. That is when DS started speaking, so we haven't kept up with signing. If a school program says they are bi-bi, how do I know that they really use ASL in all the classrooms and not SEE? Do I take a friend who used to be a terp with...

Any d/hh hockey players or parents of d/hh hockey players?

That counts! Why did you not like to wear HAs for softball/basketball?

How many of you had ASL as first Language and English as second

DS's first language was ASL. English was 2nd.

Any d/hh hockey players or parents of d/hh hockey players?

(This might not be right forum for question; ok for moderator to move to best place) DS is 4 1/2 & wears bilateral HAs. He LOVES hockey. He's been playing on foot since he could walk. Did you wear your HAs under your helmet? Did you have an FM for coach to use? Did you go to the Stan...

    Spin-off from mainstreaming thread

I had pullouts in elementary school and up until today I didn't think it was a problem. But looking back on it now, I'm sure they didn't help my not fitting in with my peers.:hmm: I was pulled out for gifted/talented, speech therapy, and French. I know I went to French during reading...

    Spin-off from mainstreaming thread

Faire-jour, since I don't know all of your info, in which state are you located? DH has his eye on a particular kind of job, but we don't know where we would eventually land, so I'd like to file that info away in my "things to know about different states" mental file. :ty:

    Spin-off from mainstreaming thread

Just an update: sent a request to Sequoia School to see about taking a tour of a campus. I finally mapped their addresses and their all-grades Mesa campus is only 11 miles from our house. The other campus, which is in Phoenix proper as we are, is about 20 miles away from our house. And oddly...

    Summer Shoes (any kind)

Keen for me! http://www.keenfootwear.com/product/ss10/shoes/women/waterfront/newport%20h2 I have the slate/canton version. Not as wide in the footbed & lighter is the "Whisper." I have a fairly wide foot and high arch. Shoes can be a total nightmare for me 'cause I'm picky about comfort.

    Spin-off from mainstreaming thread

Just had our IEP meeting recently. In addition to some articulation goals, we've written in that a TOD will help William learn to care for his HAs & also spend other time with him every month and that they will have a deaf staff member spend time with him as an adult d/hh role model. It...

Why do parents insist on ear piercings on babies and toddlers?

I had to wait until I was 10 to have my ears pierced. It made it that more special for me because I wanted it so much. At that age, I was able to care for them myself. My mom is almost 70 and still doesn't have pierced ears. Her mom did, though. I wasn't supposed to have anymore piercings...

    Etiquette

Sort of the opposite, but twice at the grocery store someone has seen me sign to my son & then they start the conversation of is he deaf. The people asking have been d/hh. It doesn't bother me. I wish I'd had more time to talk to the customers who asked one night. They looked like college...

    More hellos from Arizona

I've been lurking for a while and made a few posts, then remembered I never introduced myself. I'm the hearing mom of a bilateral mixed loss hoh son who is 4 1/2 years. He is hoh since birth; we don't know why. We didn't do genetic testing. Part of me says it doesn't matter to find out...

    Wells Fargo Discrimination!!

Actually, you can. Search for "voice biometrics." I participated in a test situation at work along with one of my sisters because we sound alike and work at the same company. While in theory, I agree with voice identification, I see how this could be a big problem for passing account...

What hearing aid clips do you like?

He's probably old enough to not have a clip, but honestly, if he does take one out, it's so much easier to find this way! Between two cars, two buses, daycare, and preschool, everyday he's got lots of chances to "misplace" them. Maybe he'll like one of the critter clips...:hmm: :ty:

    Spin-off from mainstreaming thread

Deafdyke, Thank you for your wonderful posts! I just joined ASDC. I'd never found them before, so that was a very good link. :ty: I was also inspired to re-join Arizona Hands & Voices. Personally, I don't agree with oral method, so the oral school isn't in consideration for us. I...

What hearing aid clips do you like?

My son needs a new hearing aid clip. We are currently pinning his broken one to his shirt, but that pin could come undone & poke. He does not like Ear Gear. We have two sets. What clips do you like & where to order? :ty:
