Signing in the car -- how?

Not sure if this is the right subforum, but... I have a 6 year old, so he sits in the middle of the backseat in his booster. In my car, I've always had a 2nd small rearview mirror attached to the center dash vents so that I could see him sign without turning my head. When he was little...

    childcare cost

It is good that you are thinking ahead. When my son was an infant, it was about $10k/year for his daycare. As he has gotten older, that figure has dropped. Right now, for before/after school care, holiday camp, etc. it's probably $5k/year. When I was growing up, I never expected that...

not that its a bad thing but...

As a hearing parent, I really appreciate being able to learn from all of the AD members. I get a lot to think about by reading here. I lurk mostly because I feel like, I'm not Deaf and don't have much to offer on the topic at this point. Other boards/other topics? I might have a lot to say...

Are deaf kids bullied/harrassed more frequently than hearing kids in mainstream?

I don't think it's stupid and ridiculous to still want a prom. And I think you should do it! The friend of a friend recently threw a great party where they decorated the car port, borrowed DJ equipment, hung sparkly stuff in the rafters, and had a dress theme (all in white). Everybody danced...

    Call from school -- vent

When I arrived at the school yesterday, he was sitting in the principal's office, eating his lunch, having been coaxed out from under the table. Oh, he was sent home not for hiding under the table, but for being a danger to others. It's still not clear to us how the whole thing escalated...

    Call from school -- vent

Oh great, a 2nd call. From the assistant principal. Now I have to go get him. He's hiding under a table.

    Call from school -- vent

PFH, no, it's still the public school. I need to PM you about the other school...

    Call from school -- vent

Yup. Just add this to the letter I need to write them about last week's phone call from the assistant principal and where "we" need to go from here. <grrrr>

    Call from school -- vent

Just got off the phone with my son's school. He's acting out in class again and they wanted me to talk with him. Just very frustrated because while *sometimes* he is good on a phone (cell phone w/ incoming volume all the way up), the office phone ensured we had a two-sided "What?"...

Would you date a physically disabled person?

I recently met a woman who married a man with a genetic disorder. Some of their kids inherited the gene, some didn't; some lived, some didn't. Clearly, to her, the possible inheritability was nothing to stop her from being with the person she loved or trying to have kids. I'm not looking, as...

Anyone out there with a reverse cookie bite loss?

If you don't mind sharing when you get back, I'd be interested to know how you tests go. While I went to the audie because I'm having trouble hearing men's voices, bass in music, things like that, but it was the higher frequencies that showed a loss. It's true that I don't hear things like my...

Anyone out there with a reverse cookie bite loss?

I read your post on the "Why are you deaf" thread. Was your mother's loss the same as yours? Is there anyone else deaf in your family? Do you feel that your HAs are programmed well to meet your losses? Has it been difficult to get them programmed correctly? Anything you would care to...

Anyone out there with a reverse cookie bite loss?

Jazzberry, thanks for posting that link for everyone to read. Yes, everything I've learned about this kind of loss is that it's rare. I visited an audie last week for me (well, hello there, loss in the high frequencies!) and she was intrigued that I said my son's loss was reverse cookie bite.

    What is "cued speech"?

I saw some parents of CI kids demonstrating cued speech recently and that was exactly my thought. If it's just an occassional thing, ok I sort of see the point, but if all speech is cued? Seems like a PITA, learn ASL.

Looking to make contact with folks who have this kind of loss, which is what my son has.:ty:

    Relationships with Speech-language Pathologists

My guess is because they ARE speech therapists. They aren't bi/bi therapists. I imagine their schooling is all about speech. And focused more on non d/hh clients, just like it appears that Special Ed teachers get very, very little information on teaching d/hh kids. Hopefully it's more...

What will you guys be for halloween?

Found the next-size-up Darth Vader jumpsuit @ Goodwill, so DS is happily going to continue his Sith lord costume streak. I found a scarecrow costume for me (also at Goodwill). Thrift shops around here have lots of new and used costumes. Savers (Value Village) probably has the best new...

    Beagle puppy I met

That video is one of my favorites. :D Beagles are smart. One of mine figured out how to open an unlatched arcadia door and to push down/open a door with a lever instead of a knob. We have a wooden gate in our backyard that leads to the alley. It's latched on top, but not on the bottom. So...
