    stethoscope ideas?

I'm about to meet with voc rehab about new aids and a stethoscope for nursing school. I'm wondering what kind of set up any of you in medical professions use. I have a reverse slope loss so I have the most trouble right in the range of heart sounds, but I have enough hearing to want...

So like, where do deaf people hang out?

You're in the same town as the WA school for the Deaf. Give them a call and see where deaf coffee chats and such are happening. They'll know.

    Need interpreter at eye doctor?

It's part of the cost of doing business. The money they make from other patients should offset the cost of the interpreter even if they lose money on the appointment. Now if it was a doctor that they saw a lot and it was just a quick check-up? Then maybe pen and paper would be ok. But an eye...

I too have menier's. Pretty much the exact opposite of fun. :( Contact your state's department of vocational rehabilitation. They exist for exactly these issues, getting people with disabilities back to work. I have an appointment with them on the 11th to see about new aids and an...

    Table scraps......

I taught my dog commands with hand signals because she seemed to learn them faster that way. Now, she gets SO CONFUSED when I sign! She doesn't understand what she is supposed to do!

    Deafness among dog breeds.....

white pitbulls are usually deaf. I work at a pet food store and one of my favorite dogs that comes in is a deaf white pitty. He is so cute and well behaved. Deafness in dogs is often linked to the gene(s) that causes black and white spots (usually called merle). The offspring of two such...

    dysgraphia/problems with handwriting

My handwriting was atrocious until I was in high school when it suddenly got better. I got a compliment on my handwriting the other day which floored me because I grew up with such terrible handwriting. I have no idea what caused it to be so bad for so much longer than other kids. It looked...

    Learning ASL!!!!!!!!!

The ability to sign tends to come faster than the ability to understand sign so it's likely that your fellow students don't understand unless you sign slower. It's not you! :)

Anybody notice the improvement with Netflix?

I've been finding that the captions are often significantly ahead of, or behind the speech. For someone like me, who can hear to an extent but not enough to make out all speech, it's incredibly distracting. I'm trying to read one thing while hearing but not really being able to understand...

    Embarassing lip reading moments!

My absolute favorite was in the car when I asked what a button on the dash did. What was said: "It resets the trip-meter" What I heard/saw: "It launches the torpedo" We've called that thing the torpedo launcher ever since. I guess the car was bought used from inspector gadget.

I just got accepted to nursing school!

I just found out today. I'm so excited! :laugh2: but also very nervous... I used to be awesome at getting blood pressures and hearing heart and breath sounds that other people had trouble getting (I was a ski patrol EMT). That was 7 years ago before I started losing my hearing. Now I'm...
