    veddy veddy interesting....

CART would really be helpful, even if it had delay or something, still better than nothing. I went to a sign-language play that was voice-interpreted for the hearing once, but unfortunately it was a bit hard for me since I don't get 100% of the sign language or the voice recording.

Sorry, am I late to the party? Happy belated birthday then!

Anybody deaf who can speak multiple languages?

I did take French in high school and my hearing was never really an obstacle to learning it. I dropped it senior year because of a scheduling conflict though. I don't think learning other Romance/Germanic languages is as difficult as learning Chinese or a language from a different background...

    The Daily WTF

If you're using a modern browser you shouldn't get infected just going to a site. In any case The Daily WTF has been around for about 5 years now and there's posts from fairly high-esteem people like Jeff Atwood. Just because I don't want to be a complete downer, here's another one of my...

A lot of that stuff is necessary though. Audiologists/CI surgery has had an overall positive effect on my life.

    The Daily WTF

This is my favorite article: What Is Truth? - The Daily WTF You might need to know a bit of programming to understand it though.

    Let's hit this off...

I think this is more of a problem with people "slipping through the cracks" of the education system. Actually I would support putting more money into primary education if it would help fix this. That system has its share of hangups that make this easier said than done though.

    Let's hit this off...

I don't really see a problem with the "high cost" complaint. Practically every person has some kind of physical disability (could even be something like higher risk of a disease due to genetic factors) that imposes a higher cost on society compared to if they didn't have it. It's perfectly...

How do you handle those "deaf" ppl who try to sell those ASL cards?

When I was in China in 2008, I ran into a beggar on the street who showed me a card like this. I was skeptical of him because: 1. He was actually fairly well-dressed. 2. The card was newly typed and laminated, and 3. Someone else behind him said something and he turned towards them in...

    Silence

I do like turning off my CI when I need to focus on work since it really helps to block out external distractions. I also like doing that when I just need to relax or something. When my CI is off, usually my brain is pretty active so it's not silence in that respect. I'm trying to get better...

I am not getting a CI

I hope you don't mind my asking, but what's your reason/motivation for doing this? It seems to be a pretty drastic change in lifestyle. But I do wish you good luck in what decision you want to make.

Ever had awkward moments where people thought you couldn't hear them?

Well, it's also possible there might be a similiar experience with people who don't know about lipreading? This might or might not apply to you though since I don't know what methods you use to communicate.

Ever had awkward moments where people thought you couldn't hear them?

There have been a couple of cases where people have compromised themselves in some way because they didn't expect me to be able to hear them. One vivid example would be my behind-the-wheel drivers' ed teacher. Some background: we had finished 2 classes and were almost done with the 3rd and...

Computer users with no virus/malware protection

I have to second using Microsoft Security Essentials - most reviewers find that to be the best of the free ones. But actually I've never caught a virus on my computer, though as a computer science major I'm probably more savvy than average. The even better solution is to run Linux and never...

Were you deaf and 'gifted' ?

Actually even the book was quite exaggerated:P But that's true of pretty much every secondhand relation of a "fantastic" true story, isn't it?

Were you deaf and 'gifted' ?

They actually didn't make millions of dollars - the movie is quite exaggerated. Read the book instead :P I guess it somewhat makes up for Montgomery Blair getting first place at EVERY programming competition, never letting anyone else have glory!!

Are you the only or the first deaf person in ur entire family?

lol, I probably won't be doing that, hahaha

    What's your major/field of interest?

I was curious to know what others' fields were and if there's any patterns. Some people have told me that the majority of deaf males at MIT went into computer science - that would include me, one other guy who graduated last semester, and people from previous years. I got into computer science...
