    Which OS do you prefer?

I dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu. Ubuntu is actually quite user-friendly (my mom uses it!) and it's also much more stable than Windows. I also like the better developer tools and the power of the terminal. I still need Windows for games and other stuff that's not available for Ubuntu though...

Opposite of CI; Would you install an "Off-switch" to shut off your ears? When and Why?

My CI kind of doubles as that I guess - I can turn it off and I can't hear anything while it's off (I do rarely get tinnitus though, but it's not a huge factor). It is helpful to have a mute button so to speak, especially when I'm trying to focus on something without distractions.

snopes.com: Cell Phone Recharging Electrocution I would take this email with a grain of salt.

When you talk, can you hear your voice?

Before I got my CI I wore hearing aids and I couldn't hear myself when I made high-frequency sounds (this did lead to a habit of not pronouncing them when I should have, which I've tried to correct) I can definitely second that sentiment about not liking your own voice when you hear it played...

How to fix sounding like you are "talking through your nose" when you talk?

I used to have a problem with sounding nasal, but it's mostly gone after a fairly significant amount of drilling/speech therapy. One thing you can do when practicing talking is to touch your nose with your fingers and make sure you don't feel any vibrations unless you're saying "m" or "n" sounds.

Does wearing a hearing aid/CI cause the TSA to scrutinize you?

Hold on, how does that work? How do they inspect it? I was under the impression that they put everything through the scanner or the metal detector if it stays on the person (but now the metal detectors are being replaced by full body scanners) Just to clarify, I've flown more times than I can...

Does wearing a hearing aid/CI cause the TSA to scrutinize you?

I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with this. Last month one of them asked me to remove my CI but I told him I need it to hear and he let me keep it on. But that was before they started using the more "enhanced" screenings. I'm going to be on a plane flight next week and I wanted to...

Netflix App for PS3 now has Subtitles!!

I was actually referring to streaming - I think the issue is that Netflix uses Silverlight which isn't on Ubuntu because of DRM issues. And last time I checked, Moonlight and Wine didn't work as methods to get around it. I do have Windows machines so I can just use those I guess. But with the...

    9 to 5 jobs

I had a 9-6 job over the summer for an internship. I didn't really like the rigidity that much compared to college when you can work at what hours you want as long as you get tasks done. My employer was fairly laid back though about people taking breaks and stuff as long as they got their...

What is the ONE thing your not caught without?

Cellphone, wallet, key to my dorm room (how would I get back in otherwise ) and spare batteries for my CI.

we should require tests for voters

I'm not really sure whether to laugh or facepalm  I want a copy of that mislabeled map they're using though! I LOLed when I saw Australia labeled as North Korea and New Zealand as South Korea!

    Dizzness/Loss of Balance/Equilibrium?

I had really bad dizziness symptoms in the first month after I got my CI surgery. I would sit down or lie down and almost immediately the world would start spinning around me. It was disorienting to say the least. I would definitely have a doctor check it out. My dizzy spells stopped when I...

    Texting becoming a preference?

I'm not really sure why voice calls are still so popular. Even for hearing people they're quite inconvenient: 1. Generally the person receiving the call is caught off guard and can't prepare their responses since calls are in "real-time" 2. No text record is left of the phone call which...

D.C. schools chief Michelle Rhee closed 23 schools, fired 36 principals in first year

It really is a crisis. Since manufacturing jobs in the US are going to shrink over time, the best prospect for the country's economy is an educated population, and we can't have that if schools are letting students down to this extent. I think overall schools need longer hours and higher...

Facebook possibly launching an email client?

Facebook about to launch a Gmail-slaying Titan? -- Engadget Sounds interesting, and competition is definitely good for making software better for the consumers. I probably wouldn't use it over Gmail though, since I'm not really a fan of the way Facebook "walls off" people's data so to...

    The Talking Deafie

I'm not sure if I have a "deaf accent" in the right sense of the word. Speech therapists and my parents strongly drilled me in proper pronunciation, to the point where I'm at the other extreme of stressing consonants too much and talking too fast. Or is that another flavor of deaf accents? haha...

Netflix App for PS3 now has Subtitles!!

Is it for all the videos? Or just some of them? I've been skeptical of Netflix on the whole because most of the videos on their website didn't have subtitles, even when the equivalents on Hulu and the like did have them. It also doesn't work on Linux OS because of the DRM in their video...

    Republicans love Modern Family

Kind of a funny list - can anyone who's seen more of these shows explain why they would appeal to their respective ideology. Oddly enough, Mad Men is the 2nd highest in the Democrat category, but it's my dad's favorite show and he's very Republican

D.C. schools chief Michelle Rhee closed 23 schools, fired 36 principals in first year

I agree that the DC school system needs significant reform. My mom's done some tutoring of students in Baltimore and DC and in general the system's not really providing them with what they need. Kind of disappointing if Rhee can't continue the reforms though. Seems like some people just want...
