British Sign Language beginner in need of help.

Hello there, noticed you're from Herts, so am I. Plus I have skype too. Can converse in BSL and fingerspelling - mind you it's been years since I've used them but can do it. I'm deaf and CI user, I mostly speak than sign as I'm from an oralist background but my knowledge of BSL and...

Do you find your hearing is affected in the afternoon than the morning?

As above title says, just throwing the thought around to others who've had listening tests at the hospital/clinic. I seem to find that my listening is better in the morning when I feel fresh and not so tired that the results come back marginally better but if I have it in the afternoon, it's...

    September 11, 2001

I was at home that day and I got a text message from a friend who was on the 95th floor off the WTC1 saying that a plane had hit it and wanted me to pass on a message to a relative of hers who works at the local hospital. I turned on the TV and lo behold - it was all there on the Telly, I...

Do You Dream In Sound or In Silence?

Interesting, I do find that I dream in sound and music despite being born deaf but I can hear sounds with HA's and the CI.

How old were you the first time....

In my late 20's when the audiologist suggested that I have darker HA's due to my dark hair and thought it would blend it in better than beige. So I got dark brown/black HA's. Now I have a CI and can have any colour scheme I Wanted on my CI. The main CI body is Dark Sienna and is acentuated...

    Vibrating under the bed,

Ah Sonic Alarm clocks, they're the bane of my life! I've had the traveller clock - shakeawake alarm clock (UK product) - excellent clock except I've broken 5 of them so far in the last 20 years cos everytime it goes off - I automatically think 'earthquake!' and jump out of bed pronto and...

Statistical Numbers of Deaths from Bacterial Meningitis Post CI Surgeries?

It doesn't quite involve the actual brain itself. The meninges - the fluid that protects the brain from impacts and sits between the brain and the skull can get inflamed - hence the name meningitis. As quoted from the meningitis UK website: 'Meningitis is caused when the protective membranes...

What kind of weird moments do you have?

I have a lot of those deja vu moments and some premonitions too, I had a particularly strong one when I was at boarding school, I knew that my cat had died at home and no-one told me for a week as it was the week of exams and the staff did not want to distract me. I only learned about the cat...

What the...a totally implantable Cochlear Implant?

It looks quite ambiguous to me as it says that the implant is suitable for those with sensi-neural hearing loss? With sensi-neural loss - it can mean anything from a defective bone to no hairs in cochlea. If the implant were to work- it would be best suited those with ossification as there'll...

    Activate

Oh, that's great and am happy for you Pinky. It's interesting to see how each one of us responds to the CI. Can you tell us if they turned on a few electrodes or all of them? And was it all weird to start off with and then suddenly recognising sounds?

    Did you or do you...

Yes, I can think of 4 people that had hearing aids and are/were teachers. Two of them were PE & curriculum teachers at my High School. One of them was an ex-pupil, a grade below me trained to be a teacher, teached at a hearing school in republic of Ireland and now moved to teach at a deaf...

How well does your CI actually work?

I've only been switched on for the last 3 weeks and can say that it's way better than my HA's much to my surprise, no more muffled sounds and certain sounds being not there. I'm beginning to find that I can understand my colleagues without having to concentrate so hard and can expect that to...

Good luck Pinky! :thumb: It's quite an experience that each CI user goes through, me 3 weeks on - still on the exciting ride! Let us know if they've switched a couple on or all on. Look forward to hearing your progress.

    Monikers, Screenames, nicknames.

Mine came out of a classroom doodlebook when I was bored. Played around with anagrams and thought it was cool at the time but now it's so easy to remember but hard to pronounce  It's an anagram of my past 3 cats - Livi, Muffy and Sammy.

    Direction

With 2 HA's can locate sound but since having the CI, can only locate sound on the implanted ear and not the other side :| if the sound's coming from the other side, I will turn around and try and locate it - it usually works.

    CI Moments

SNAP - I had that with my ENT doc - last year! I went to my GP to request a referral meet the CI people and the CI doc said that I'd get minimal benefit from it but left it open for me to decide, but I perserved with it and am so glad that I went through with it.

    CI Moments

Had a first CI moment yesterday, my first mapping had only 3 electrodes switched on and were unable to hear things fully but yesterday all electrodes were switched on and was with the speech therapist doing some comprehension tests. Quite easy test involving syllables. I had my eyes closed and...

What word do you hate the most?

I detest this word completely, makes me very mad and I'd say 'your loss! ain't telling you my news!' and walk off. Other words I do not like very much when I was younger - a snide 'what?' when you call their attention when they're absorbed in something else. And oh, patronizing comments...

    Ear wax

I had always wondered about that, cos I tend to get minimal clear 'wax' as opposed to the orangey stuff. I'm of a mixed race, half Indian and rest European. The Audi and ENT doc always remarked that I don't look Indian but the wax refutes that. Give me clear wax over orange wax anyday :-o The...
