    Deaf and English Literacy

The "ghoti" is pronounced "fish" is a joke (wrongly attributed to George Bernard Shaw). It is never pronounced like that. But it is making a serious point that English is not a consistently phonetic language, unlike say, Spanish. BTW some of the spelling differences between American English and...

    Deaf and English Literacy

I attribute my English literacy to the vast amounts of reading I did as a kid. I learned to speed read early on as I didn't attempt to vocalise the words in my head but read words visually recognising their shapes. There are loads of words I don't know how to pronounce but I know what they mean...

i am wondering.....how much importat is woman beauty for all men?

Looks play a part, especially in the early stages, but there's too much emphasis on this nowadays. And some very beautiful women become very arrogant as things get handed on a plate to them and they fail to learn manners & respect for others, qualities needed to make a relationship last.

    data usage on mobile phone

I have a 500MB monthly limit on my Android phone (HTC Desire). If I go over, I have to pay extra. Also I don't have a wi-fi so this limit has to stretch to cover every single download. I'm careful about how much I download (no video streaming) so I manage to stay below the 500MB limit nearly...

    Breathing noises

It's possible. My wife sometimes complains about the noise I make breathing/chewing/etc. It tends to happen when I have a blocked up nose due to cold/hay fever/dust allergy. Also when I was really overweight I would wheeze and snore far more.

Do you guys embrace your hearing loss/deafness?!

My answer to your question Hannah Louise is that I am very affected by how people around me treat me. Because my deafness caused me to be treated badly by the hearing people around me (usually unintentionally but still very painful & shaming) I didn't like showing people my hearing aids, I...

    Starting intensive BSL classes today

Brilliant Buffalo :laugh2: I remember seeing this years ago before I knew any BSL as I'm a big fan of Monty Python and in particular their 4 Yorkshiremen sketch. It was interesting to watch it again now that I know some BSL. Still needed the subtitles to understand all of it though. Thanks...

Just wondering if I'm the only Squaxx dek Thargo on AD? I'm a big fan of the British anthology comic 2000AD (home of Judge Dredd) and was wondering if there is anybody on AD who likes reading this comic. My favourite characters tend to be the earlier ones like Dan Dare & ABC Warriors...

Urgh! I sympathize with you about the tinnitus and increased hearing loss as that has been my experience over the last 12 months. After a while the lack of sleep becomes torture. I hope that your situation improves very soon.

What Are You Reading Right now?

For the last week or so, I've been reading Ken Follett's 'Pillars of the Earth'. It's set in the 12th century and it about the building of a cathedral. I have a keen interest in architecture and history, so it's an interesting read.
