getting a CI as a adult.. is it worth it?

Hi James, I'm from London and am wondering whether to get a CI too  There is a dedicated section here in AD (AllDeaf) about CIs and if you take the time to go through the different threads, you'll find out who the CI users are and what their experience of CIs is like. It takes time...

    Asl/bsl/more

I started learning a sign language about four months ago (BSL) so it's all very new for me. My initial experience is how different it is. Different rather difficult. In fact I find BSL classes easier as I don't have to use my unreliable ears and can just use my eyes. Plus there's no writing...

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

As someone who is currently experiencing the distressing sense of isolation as my increasing hearing loss takes me out of the hearing world, I can say that I would have appreciated being able to talk to a counsellor to help me cope with the transition. As it happened, I discovered this forum and...

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

In the technology section of this website, there are a few threads on smartphone apps and voice-to-text technology. As far as I know, there isn't anything that does what you want. The nearest I know of is an app that can be used in face-to-face conversations - but it only works for short...

My chicken is ill | Excuse used by support worker

Have you seen the recent documentary on the BBC about Deaf Teens? [link describing programme in more detail] There is an amusing (and annoying!) incident when a support worker says she can only help a Deaf student for half of a lecture as her chicken is ill. A real WTF moment! I have a problem...

    In The Future..

Hi Krissy, I've recently discovered there's a London subtitled cinema group and I've decided to attend the next meeting to find out what it's like. This new year, why not set up your own subtitled cinema group? | Charlie Swinbourne It looks like you need something similar in Manchester...

    Router replacement

Snap! I need a new router myself. Chap in shop recommended Netgear and told me to stay clear of Belkin. I don't have that much technical knowledge so can't personally advise you purplecatty. Chap in shop also recommended that I buy a separate wireless AP instead of an integrated wireless router...

Intensive BSL course | Level 2 in 2 weeks!!!

The course at Femaura uses a portfolio approach rather than an exam at the end of the course (bit like an NVQ). We are regularly videotaped and our progress is recorded. By the end, our signing has to meet the Level 2 standard and use the vocabulary expected. I was assessed by another BSL tutor...
