CAPD terminology (Audi says I'm "hearing impaired.")

The audiologist theorized that a minor version of that might have been the cause of my issues. When I was born, the umbilical cord was wrapped around my neck and I was deprived of oxygen for a short while. They also had to really struggle to get me out, using forceps and things. The...

I read that this was offensive in "For Hearing People Only," a book on Deaf culture that I read in my ASL 1 class. Here's a link on this forum to a discussion on the subject: http://www.alldeaf.com/general-chat/81464-hearing-impaired-offensive.html And another...

Ah, don't worry about it. Is fine. :) Quite interesting stuff, too.

Hey cool! I wonder if I know any of them. I've lived in SJ and Sunnyvale, both!

Maybe I've just gotten too damned involved with identity politics in the LGBT community. Everyone is always up in arms about what labels apply to whom there. I'm always trying to be sensitive to everyonr's labels. Perhaps this is a bit different here. :)

CAPD terminology (Audi says I'm "hearing impaired.")

Thanks for the thoughts, everyone. Having only been diagnosed last Tuesday, I'm still kinda figuring a lot of this out. I'm actually not sure myself just how good or bad my comprehension is in any given situation. Or, at least, I wasn't sure until I recently started paying attention to such...

You mean as opposed to describing it as "Hard of Hearing?" Why did they make that suggestion? What is the motivation to distinguish between APD and HoH? Not saying it's right or wrong, just asking, as it is different from what some of the posts here have been saying.

    Fingerspelling practice

Besides grabbing a friend and fingerspelling words at each other, what's a good way to practice reading fingerspelling? I'm doing the exercises on Dr. Bill Vicars' American Sign Language (ASL) Fingerspelling Practice Site At this point, I can get it in 1-2 repeats on fast speed, and 3-5 on...

CAPD terminology (Audi says I'm "hearing impaired.")

From what I understand, many people with hearing loss have many of the same sorts of issues as me. As background noise increases, the ability to understand people diminishes rapidly. Telephones present a challenge, particularly when dealing with a person you don't know or a context you're...

Randomly, I actually do have a minor loss in a very high frequency. I haven't gotten my report from Dr. Paton yet, but she said that it was so high and so minor that I probably wouldn't have noticed it.

Yeah. I think you're right. Based on her tests and my described symptoms, she has diagnosed the most likely culprit. I suppose I could always go in for more confirmation, more expensive tests, etc. But everything I've read and heard seems to indicate that they wouldn't be able to find...

CAPD terminology (Audi says I'm "hearing impaired.")

I saw Dr. Judy Paton.. She performed a bunch of hearing tests where she played audio in my ears and I responded by repeating the words I heard or affirming that I hear various sounds. We didn't do any electrode tests.

CAPD terminology (Audi says I'm "hearing impaired.")

Indeed. So one of the things that has masked my hearing condition for most of my life is the fact that I'm a really good player at "the guessing game." You know what I'm talking about... where people talk and you're guessing what they're saying, using context and other clues to fill in the...

CAPD terminology (Audi says I'm "hearing impaired.")

I've been studying cultural oppression stuff for too long to claim membership to a culturally oppressed minority group just like that. I've been raised to think of myself as a member of the majority in this case: A hearing person. Whether or not that's correct, the cultural baggage associated...

I have to admit, Jillio... All of this is losing me a bit. You seem to know what you're talking about, but I'm having some trouble understanding. When the audiologist sent me away, she gave me a sheet of paper with 4 different "general locations" for CAPD: Brain stem, Posterior...

CAPD terminology (Audi says I'm "hearing impaired.")

I explained it to a few of my coworkers today, and they seemed to get the whole "My noise filter doesn't work" thing. Of course, these are close coworkers. I don't think I'd discuss this with folks just generally out in the world. Probably not even with coworkers in generally. And really, I...

CAPD terminology (Audi says I'm "hearing impaired.")

Given how much of an alien and outsider I feel like in many hearing situations because of my inability to hear people, I don't really feel all that tied to a "hearing identity." By the same token, I'm not about to claim a new identity without first fully understanding the implications of such...

CAPD terminology (Audi says I'm "hearing impaired.")

So when she was talking about the brain stem, what she was talking about was damage to or problems with the 8th cranial nerve? And somehow that damage interferes with my ability to filter important sounds from unimportant sounds?
