How to Decide on Cochlear Implant Surgery for Children

Regardless of the fact that this is what we're doing (written English, no speech), I don't think it's appropriate. I very much follow the theory of "whatever works for your child". It's not the place of the powers-that-be to take that away from parents. Some schmuck who's never met me or my...

How to Decide on Cochlear Implant Surgery for Children

Forgive me, I've not read the entire thread. Am I to understand correctly that this means forcing a communication method on a child. "You MUST sign AND speak English! It's the LAW!" If that's the case, then it needs to apply to ALL students. Why let the hearing kids get out of it?

How to Decide on Cochlear Implant Surgery for Children

This is the direction we're going in with my daughter. ASL + written English. She just had her last speech therapy session last week. She's stuck in a TC classroom for another year, so will still be exposed to speech, but will not receive any services in that area. She will get individual...

How to Decide on Cochlear Implant Surgery for Children

I would LOVE to be able to get my older daughter into a bibi program. Heck, I'd be happy for her to even get some TC at this point but we can't even get her into the same building as my younger, even though she was enrolled there this year.

    parents - overwhelmed and undereducated

Signing time is an excellent place to start. Check your local library. they even have a 'baby signing time' series. Baby Einstein also has a signing DVD. Contact your county human/family/child services department and inquire about early intervention services. If they are less than...

    Trilingualism

How are you learning ASL? It really sounds like you could use some assistance. If you are not learning structure and rules of the language, you're just learning words. Without syntax, grammar, classifiers and proper expression, you're only learning a fraction of the skills needed.

    Trilingualism

Because there are 2 signs for it. We learned one locally and the other from the Signing Time series. Signing Time is based on the west coast, so there is some regional variation to the signs presented, for this specific sign I've seen it used pretty widely. Is it so terrible to expand one's...

Because they don't want to? Why should they? I really like the regional dialects around the country. It gives the language a dramatic flair and uniqueness. How boring would it be if every talked the same?

In Texas, I believe it would be called a 'coke'. See this visual I have also seen that sign used for the term 'soft drink' and when referring to Kool Aid type drinks (when not referring to a specific brand).

they may be different countries, but it's the same language. International differences are absolutely no different than regional differences within the same country. In the end, it's all English.

It's exactly the same. a sign *is* a word. An everyday example for me would be siging 'cereal'. We have 2 signs for it and we use them interchangeably. There's no confusion. Same with 'pizza'.

It's plainly obvious people experience things differently based on their life experience and personality. I never, at any time, let my brief spell of grief 'damage' my child. I never treated her any differently, blamed her or wished she was different/fixed. I was scared. I worried that...

Suggestions - teaching my hearing 5month niece ASL

We prefer ooVoo, but same thing essentially. My daughter's been video chatting for about 18 months now with her dad when he's out of town and with her Deaf Mentor.

Suggestions - teaching my hearing 5month niece ASL

i have been told many signs are regional versions, since Signing Time is based on the west coast. They're not necessarily wrong, just not known in some areas.

I'm sorry people have thought/said things like that, but it is definitely not my view on it. Judging people for an emotional reaction, or lack there of, is presumptuous and rude.

What a horrifying ordeal to go through. *hugs* For us, the hearing loss was the 'worst'... not that it's the worst thing that could have happened, but it was the most unexpected and we were absolutely unprepared for it. After a picture perfect pregnancy and delivery, this was completely out...
