HECK YES! Lol, welcome to the world of (at least dedicated) sign language students. I think this happens some with spoken language too, but it seems to happen more to people learning sign than other spoken language. I think using a different MODE of communication all together really changes your...
False--- thank God. This doesn't mean Signer hasn't gone over the speed limit however (105 on the freeway isn't THAT bad, is it?)
The person below me has a second toe longer than his/her big toe.
I prefer signing rather than speech. This sounds weird, as I'm a hearing person who only started learning ASL a little over two years ago. I still have plenty to learn with ASL, and my English is pretty good, so signing is definitely not my most articulate way of communicating...yet.
I'm...
Living in the deaf dorms, and socializing with the deaf community, I have been exposed to a lot of different "deaf" voices. There is virtually no one who is born deaf/hoh that can't be recognized as being so when they voice. There are some hoh people who can get away with sounding like they have...
My thoughts EXACTLY!!! Since when did CI's becoming necessary? They are an OPTION, that's IT.
Um... okay, maybe I misunderstood you... but not all "disabled" people need Social Security. There are plenty of deaf/blind/wheelchair-using people that can and do find jobs and don't need the...
Hey, no big deal, it's just friendly teasing, lol, I don't want to start a war with someone online, their (LOL) just ugly, stupid, and childish. Haha, we've gone way off of the point of the article but whatever, the article was stupid anyway.
Yes, bad grammAr irritates me immensEly at times, but especially when it comes from the mouth/hands of a native speaker. I understand when people have trouble with their 2nd/3rd/4th lang. etc. but I hope that most people will put in the effort to master their first language. I don't consider any...
Lol. Some hearing people switch the "f" and "th" in certain words, many people mean to say "deaf' and say "death" instead, or vice-versa. this is just due to bad grammar and acceptance in some parts of American culture. Also, when hearing people ask me my major, and I tell them deaf studies...
UMMMM... WHAT? Any ASL teacher or student who would let that go is just...wow. I hope nobody actually claimed that and it was a reporter error. AHHHH so much ignorance in the hearing world.... but how would I know? I'm a death studies major :)
Disclaimer: It is 3am, and I am very tired, lol.
As Javapride put it yes, the mirrors are very helpful! Also, you can see other people pulling over and know that you should. At this point, so many cars are made to be so sound proof that most hearing people don't hear emergency vehicles...
Depends on the floor, some floors carry vibrations better than others, (i.e., wood better than concrete). When I want a deaf person's attention, I usually wave my hand in the "deafie" way, or tap them.
WARNING: This doesn't always work if you get used to it and do it in hearing culture...
Thank you LMM for responding so nicely. I actually didn't mean the "ing" words like- going, crying, dying.. etc. I mean more like "ring, sing, boring, etc."
The biggest problem I have is keeping up with everyone in a group signing ASL. It takes me a sec to realize who is talking...
For fingerspelling, a great website to check out is asl.ms, it is short and sweet, and has different levels appropriate for just about everyone. If you use it enough you start to get repeat words, but other than that, it's really good!
I originally learned the days of the week facing out...
I can't answer this question out of a lot of personal experience, and as I am not deaf, any deaf person can feel free to correct me. What I was taught from a very experienced 'terp, not that I agree or disagree with this, (and this is talking about the experiences of female terps) "Most deaf men...
The biggest difference between "where" and "democrat" whether or not you use a "1" or "d" handshape for where, no matter the context, is facial expression. If you are asking a "wh" question, your eyebrows go down. If you are using "where" rhetorically, your eyebrows go up. Either way, that...
I think something that nobody has ever clarified in this thread is how hearing people think, and how it compares to the way deaf people think. People who are born hearing and remain hearing at least to the age of 5 (maybe even younger) have an internal monologue, a voice inside their heads that...
You have to understand that ASL and English are two completely separate languages. Someone was saying that all ASL signs had English equivalents, word-for-word. What about the signs "true business" and "train go (sorry)?" Though there are equivalent English idioms or words, they cannot simply be...
I've been learning sign for almost exactly two years now. I took four semesters through the community college during high school, and I am now a freshman at CSUN. I would say that I "fell in love" with ASL my second semester, when I had a deaf teacher. Since that time, I have gone to deaf...
