Does sign language benefit autistic kids?

I have a friend whose kid was having some difficulty with communication development. I don't think it was as serious as autism, but learning some sign really, really helped him. He was able to express things in sign that he wasn't in English, and it helped him along the way to better communication.

Parents apathy in their deaf child's educational progress etc

Right, or baby sign is fine for hearing kids but don't teach ASL to deaf babies.

    NIC Written exam

Then that's their problem. You have explained the situation politely; if they don't like it, they know what to do about it. (They just don't want to.) I had to learn really early on how to deal with "Don't interpret that!" -- teachers love to say stupid crap and then get worried about it being...

    VLogs with(out) captions

How do you expect them to learn to give a shit about you if they don't know what you're saying? I don't disagree with you necessarily, just making a point.

    Political Correctness on Deafness

Here's the problem in a nutshell: How can you combat audism when the oppressors don't even know they're being audist -- or even worse, feel they are NOT?

    Signing and Poker Don't Mix

Unfortunately, I do see their point. Casinos are constantly on the lookout for cheating, which can include hand and other body signals. They won't assume that you are following the rules appropriately since the people who work there are trained to be very suspicious. It's sad to say but I...

    Cued Speech: your opinion?

It's another tool in the toolbox and if a kid responds well to it and acquires language naturally, then I'm all in favor of it.

Is it OK for an ASL teacher to be Hearing?

The worst ASL teacher I ever had was Deaf. She was a wonderful signer and introduced me to Deaf culture but she had no idea at all how to teach ASL. Her ideas were grounded in language teaching from the '60s. The best ASL teachers I had were hearing. One was a CODA and one had extensive...

    ASL in public schools??

There is also a requirement that a foreign language have an associated culture. Some schools don't recognize that this is the case, unfortunately. dreamchaser, I don't disagree with your overall viewpoint at all. ASL should absolutely be more widely known and recognized. Personally I don't...

Are Deaf People (from birth) Disabled?

I asked my deaf students to write an opinion paragraph on this very topic. (It had come up in class so I went with it.) The very interesting thing was, some people's opinion was that because deaf people have to rely on HAs, CIs, interpreters, assistive devices, and so forth, this means they are...
