Thanks Banjo for a very well written memo. Peter

No more CC on WB DVD "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix"

The main reason the author of this thread wants CC with solid background because he has eye sight problem and has difficulty reading subtitles against pictures. I am sure he would prefer digital CC if the CC background was solid and appropriate font size. The whole point of this thread is...

    High Definition captioning

When you say "I can't get CC ...", do you mean analog or digital TV programs? For analog TV programs, the problem is in the TV. For digital programs (SD or HD), the problem is external like Direct TV receiver. If you use OTA antenna connected directly to the TV, then both analog and digital...

    Closed captions on component video

Before you buy a TV, either download TV's operating manual from TV's web site or ask a sales person to get you one to make sure CC is supported via component cable. Sony TV's support CC vis component only if DVD player component out is set to interlace scan (non-progressive scan). It appears...

    Closed captions on component video

Your DVD player is probably set to "progressive" scan from the factory. Typically you cannot see Closed Caption if DVD player component out is set to progressive scan. Try change it to "interlaced" scan via menu setup and Closed Caption hopefully will work. What brand and model #...

    Nbc Hd

I have a similar problem with our local Reno, NV NBC station. When HD was first broadcast several years ago, HD CC worked fine until about six months ago when NBC local news switched to HD. Now, all HD programs EXCEPT local news do not broadcast HD. Local news is now HD and CC works perfectly...

    Closed captioning on newer TV's

Sorry that I was not clear about my last post. I meant if the CC from Phillips remote control didn't work, they could return the Phillips remote control, not the TV.

    Closed captioning on newer TV's

The remote control Pacman listed appears to have CC. I found a user manual at: Philips Support - PM435S If it does not work, you can always return it.

HDTV Captioning: What You Should Know

Have you tried using HDMI or DVI cables? Try using them with WII (if WII supports DVI/HDMI) or HD digital cable. If you are using cable box to watch HD digital cable, there should be either DVI or HDMI connector at the back of cable box and still be able to watch CC. You will have to enable CC...

    I'm depressed...

Thanks for the info. Remember, I don't buy movies, just rent them. I don't have the need to collect movies. Yeah, I know about renting from Netflix but I am not interested. I believe they charge monthly for unlimited movies but I don't watch enough movies each month. Peter

    I'm depressed...

Personally, I like today's technology CC. I like being able to change font styles and sizes of digital CC of my TV. I do not use CC for DVD movies because I prefer progressive scan (480p) than interlaced (480i) and CC cannot be viewed using progressive scan. I am picky and I do notice picture...

    I'm depressed...

Yeah, I was afraid of that. Oh well, like I said I can wait and the price of Blu-Ray players will drop even further down. Peter

    I'm depressed...

That's great news. I always rent movies from Blockbuster. I have to check it out. Peter

    I'm depressed...

I am hoping Blu-Ray will win mainly because of larger disc capacity than HD-DVD. I am patient and I can wait. I don't buy movies. I always rent movies from local video store and they don't yet carry High Definition movies probably because it's not cost effective to sell/rent both formats. Peter

    I'm depressed...

I am waiting for the format war to be over before buying either Blu-ray or HD-DVD player. Until then, I am sticking with sub-titles from DVD movies.

Create sticky thread about analog & digital CC?

I am going to try my best describing the difference between analog and digital CC in layman's terms. I am not going to describe in technical details but I will describe what works and what do not work for today's analog and digital CC. TVs with built-in analog CC decoder (480i or lower)...

    does HDMI support CC?

    does HDMI support CC?

Please read Banjo's thread: http://www.alldeaf.com/captioning-sign-language-interpreter/42509-hdtv-captioning-what-you-should-know.html It explains very clearly how digital CC works using HDMI as well as DVI. Are you trying to get CC working using DVD player via HDMI? Peter

CC- now you see it, now you don't???

An amplifier might work probably because the CC decoder inside TV might be getting weak. If you get very good signal (no ghosts or snow) from cable in all channels, an amplifier might make the TV pictures look worse because it will amplify an already strong signal. CC decoder is a separate...
