    BiBi success stories.

:giggle: There will be no positive contributions from me on this thread... I am glad Shel90 posted. From her other postings it sounds like her school is on the right track to meeting its goal for students.

Update on my son: 9.5 months old - now with CIs

I laughed out loud when I read this. I know the decision to have surgery was not made lightly. Best of luck to you as you raise your child.

    Ranting of an English teacher

That certainly could be one explanation for certain groups of people. For the 5th grade kids I worked with however, they had six years of the "bi-bi" curriculum that obviously left out the bi in the bi-bi. I believe it has more to do with what reading strategies are in place and what...

Deaf Community Responds To Reading Level Comment

Use of ASL does not mean one would learn to read. You learn to read by reading, with or without instruction.

    Any Sign for Mint

By all means, make up a sign. In my household I got tired of spelling cantaloupe. I made up a sign: 'orange' + 'melon'. I would probably sign mint by rubbing my index finger and thumb near my nose if I used that word often.

    Ranting of an English teacher

Lack of expectations may be one obstacle to reading. When my parents were told I would not read beyond 4th grade level, they were confused. There is nothing wrong with my brain. Why would I not be able to read on par with peers? When I worked in the dorm I pushed reading. The kids came in...

    European Cookies, Candies, Pastries

Regarding Kinder eggs, I called my local German bakery and they carry Kinder eggs. This will make a nice Xmas gift for my sister if I pack the eggs carefully.

Titles: Mr. Mrs. and Miss..how to sign?

I don't think I have ever seen a sign for titles, nor were they spelled. When I was in elementary the houseparents were called Title FirstName. The kids who could talk said Title FirstName, the kids who did not talk did not know of this courtesy and they just said FirstName. The teachers...

Any interesting/ed of video-games & any game consoles

Cookies & Cream for PS2. It is a two player game, and you have to work together to overcome separate obstacles. For example, if the other person gets to a river, you have to push a log so she can hop across the river. If anyone knows of more games like this one, let me know. I do not play...

    European Cookies, Candies, Pastries

Kinder eggs from Germany. As a child I had to take care not to bite too hard because the toy was inside. I see on the net the toys are now enclased in a plastic shell.

    Leaving babies to cry

I think it depends on the baby. If the baby is crying just a little due to boredom or loneliness, it could be left alone to learn how to cope. If the baby is crying to exhaustion, I agree it is abuse. Sometimes it only takes a few minutes to soothe the baby, so why not do it?

Do you get treated differently at work?

Treated differently? Absolutely. First job 20 years ago was with the government. None of the deaf were allowed to talk. Supervisor came down hard on us. At a fast food restaurant I started with washing dishes, sweeping/mopping the floor. A new shift manager was hired and she made everyone...

    Two-month-old Ivy using sign language

My niece knew the signs for "eat", "bottle", "finish", and "more" before she started walking. It made her parents' lives easier. They did not have to play guessing games to understand what she was crying about. It was neat.

    Problems with manager at work

Being treated as a mentally retarded person is never fun. If you are not comfortable telling the manager she is treating you like one, then be ready to speak up next time she is rude to you (especially in front of a customer). A response as suggested earlier is good: The issue here is coupon...

Do you possess blind trust regarding interpreting / relay service?

I do not have VP at work, and even at home I prefer to use relay through website. I avoid making customer calls at work because I have been burned too many times with operator's refusal to admit their mistake or being lazy with my personal calls. Here is an example of the latter: You have...

Difference between Cochlear contour and Freedom implants

SouthFella - You go! With all the chatter (elsewhere) about the reliability of AB, no one is talking about how unethical Cochlear America has been. One can learn more by checking wikipedia website. On a serious note: the newer model gives better speech comprehension. Check out the studies.
