Do you have a hearing dog?

I'd love to have a hearing dog, really I would! Problem is, I'm probably not considered 'deaf enough'. And it's about 2 years on a waiting list. The amount of times I've missed the door, missed the phone, burnt the food, left the food in the microwave to go cold, forgot about my cup of tea...

    My son!

I've had a baby boy recently, he's just over 2 weeks old. (can't get the pic smaller, sorry! On wife's Myspace, not mine) We named him Alexander, though I know it's a bit of a controversial name in the Deaf Community because of AG Bell, sod him. We named him Alexander so we can call him...

    My kid doesn't sign back

Thanks for the updates guys. I've kinda turned my voice off when I sign to my daughter; she's signing more now. I will voice new words occasionally until she has got used to them, then I won't voice them. It seems to be working out better in the long run. :) See, signing. :D I'm so proud...

Hi, I am Japanese deaf, own coffee shop in NC!

Hi and welcome to AD! Nice to see someone from Japan here. I know Japanese fingerspelling and a couple of signs, but not many (about 3, 4). My Japanese is in need of improvement, too, because I haven't studied it for a long time. Looks like you're popular already, I think you'll enjoy it...

Oralism eradicating ASL in the near future?

Hmmmm.... horrible to have to think about something like that. I don't think oralism will destroy ASL in the near future any more than SEE or cued speech would. ASL is pretty widely spoken and has off-shoot languages, even Thai Sign is supposed to be from ASL. ASL also has many many more...

How many people here are can sign in 2 different languages?

:) Thanks guys! There is a "British Signed English", but it doesn't seem very prevalent. I've seen it only in a book, where it had "British Signed English "to"" and that was all that I saw or heard of it. :D

    Cued Speech: your opinion?

Lol! One of my uni teachers does that. I told her "Don't move around too much, because though I'm not deaf, I do have to lipread. Especially you, because you're like, the quietest teacher ever." So she tries for half an hour, then whizzes around the room after that (and dances!). So I didn't...

How many people here are can sign in 2 different languages?

As the title says, how many people here are bilingual in sign languages? For example, anyone know ASL and BSL? Or ASL and Auslan? I know BSL, but I know a little bit of ASL (it's so hard though, maybe because I don't use it). I'd love to be bilingual. :)

How do you feel if your newborn baby is deaf?

If my baby (only 3 weeks left) is born deaf, I'd make sure he [they think he's a he] was Deaf ;) I wouldn't care at all, as long as my baby is born healthy, I don't care if he's born deaf. I know sign (I'm not perfect but oh well! I'm still learning), so it's okay. :D Apparently, the doctors...

Hearing momma to a Deaf girl

:) She's sweet. She kinda reminds me of my friend's kid, only lighter hair. :) Same cheeky smile.

    Deaf culture - do's and don'ts, etc. Let's make a list!

Ohh, for sounds that use your tongue hitting against (the "alveolar ridge" as we learned it in uni)/roof of your mouth (l, t, d, n, etc)? That must've irritated the buggery out of you. What if you don't like peanut butter? Eck.

    Honorifics?

I've only ever seen 'em fingerspelled in BSL..

    Deaf culture - do's and don'ts, etc. Let's make a list!

Eww, what if they have clammy sweaty hands? :( I understand why they used these techniques. Shame they aren't always (some people are better with this type of learning than others I guess) effective though. How, exactly, does the peanut butter thing work? Hm. I can't imagine how it...

    Your favourite pizza!?

What is your favourite pizza? I'm a BBQ chicken man myself, but I love good old "plain pizza"! If you like to make your own, care to share your recipe? Does anyone make it from scratch, including the base? I've never made the base from scratch, but I did make one excluding the base. It...

What Ticks You Off (Most) About Hearies?

Lol! This happens with a few of my friends. Apparently it's really common to move your head from side to side in some places, especially India. I think that their heads are just loose and need screwing on a bit tighter though. :D What happens if you tell them to stop moving their head? It...

    Cued Speech: your opinion?

Hey! :) I've just been watching some stuff on cued speech, and I've noticed there's a few threads here and there, so I thought I would ask. What are people's opinions on cued speech? Does anyone use it here? I've just been watching some stuff on it. It looks really difficult and slow...

ASL, PSE, or SEE, which is superior

Personally I think ASL (or in my case BSL) is the best choice. I'm quite keen on SEE and I want to learn some of the grammar signs (the British variation preferably, but ASL SEE will do until then. Someone could always help and link to a website with video with like, "the", "a", "to", "for"...
