    Phonak FM System

So, we're ordering Tyler a new set of ha's and FM system in 2 weeks. I'm getting him a set of junior Naida's V. But wondering what kind of FM system... any suggestions... Phonak of course. I want something fairly easy to use... but also that will last him awhile as they are...

    the new Phonak Naida IXs

Nucleus 5 upgrade for an older model implant is available?

I was checking the Nucleus 5 out... it looks pretty awesome. Tyler goes for a CI evaluation next Friday.

    1 ci & 1 ha

He'd be able to do both... although a lot of the time I usually speak and sign to him. He might get it from behind his back but it would be harder. I'd be more confident face to face with speech & signs.

    1 ci & 1 ha

I have told them over and over and over again... and they always make excuses! Which is why I am getting an 2nd opinion elsewhere and also meeting with the cochlear team. I have told the audiologist that he's still not speaking and I don't believe he is getting all speech sounds. All I ever...

    1 ci & 1 ha

Hearing test tomorrow at our "usual" place - I will mention discrimination testing to them. But to be quite honest, I don't expect them to do it... they have been pretty much useless up until this point. We are awaiting a hearing test with the cochlear department and I will definetely...

    1 ci & 1 ha

I may be jumping ahead of myself but just curious... If Tyler is a candidate for CI - but they only do his right ear (his right ear is severe, but his left ear is moderate-severe)... what is it like to have 1 cochlear and 1 hearing aid? To me, I would think it would sound very strange...

    Appointment

This is exactly what we're hoping for. But obviously we don't know ASL so we're providing him with whatever signs we know - and then introduce him into playgroups and Deaf people to facilitate ASL for all us. I'm only referring to TC - by means of giving him whatever he needs.

    Appointment

Okay... it sounds as though you're relating tc to SEE? That's not what I meant. Yes, we do SEE with Tyler - and I am quite aware it's not a language... but it's giving us some of the initial signs and easing frustration. And as for exposing him to a language - we're introducing Tyler to...

    Appointment

To me, "total communication" is exactly that - total accessibility/availability to various communication modes - ASL, oral, lip reading, PECS, written english, etc... Whatever works for him! I didn't pick the term "tc" - in fact I had no idea prior to Tyler was "tc" even was. It was...

    Appointment

Thanks AlleyCat! :) We're trying to expose Tyler to as much sign & speech as possible. I've got lots of DVD's, books, signs, not to mention a Deaf teacher & a Deaf friend who are exposing him to ASL. I want Tyler to have access to all methods - TC. I know he's behind but he's...

    Appointment

Oh yes, we are going to one of the best Cochlear Implant Units for children in our area. If he's not a candidate (which we'll find out) atleast the SLP there will meet with him. I understand he needs more signs... and don't you worry... he is being exposed to them. There is no...

    Appointment

Our son has an appointment in 2 weeks in the cochlear unit. Our appointment consists of SLP and Social Work. We are still awaiting an appointment for audiology... they will be getting back to us shortly. I don't know if he'll be a candidate but I want to revisit it. He also has an...

    Deaf & Autistic

Tyler is strong willed... he likes to get his own way and see how far he can push people. lol But on the other hand, he cuddles, he gives awesome kisses and hugs, he laughs when we laugh, and he enjoys playing with us. His eye contact was limited when he was younger but as he's got...

    ASL Flash Cards?

Yes, that's exactly what I was referring to. I'm going to try and enlarge a few flashcards and place them on objects. Learn a few signs every week.

    ASL Flash Cards?

    Hey that's a good idea!

    ASL Flash Cards?

So, as Tyler is VERY visual and we're trying to teach him new signs everyday... I was looking for somewhere to buy some big boards to hang on our walls. I can't seem to find any... but I did find a pack of ASL flash cards for kids. I'm thinking about hanging some of these up around the...

    Deaf & Autistic

That's exactly what I want to do... prove them wrong! I was so excited to show them the progress he had made with his signs and instead they just continued to go on about his short comings. I never thought about written english... he's still fairly young, 3, but that's something I will...
