The difference in technology to help the deaf children hear, then and now

I am starting this thread because i came across a few posts that stated how even though a deaf person aquires language, they still have a hard time comprehending things. From what i read of peoples own experiences, i can understand why people get frustrated with parents decisions to choose the...

Can someone who is severely deaf talk normally?

I agree with using both oral and sign methods. The one thing you have to remember is technology has gotten a lot better since 10 or 20 years ago. Even for the profoundly deaf, depending on the device they choose and how early they start therapy makes a big difference in not only speech but also...

    Pet haters

I would love to have a pet for my daughter. Unfortunately i'm very allergic to cats and scared of dogs. I got bit by a dog when i was younger and i just can't seem to get over the fear :( . I've tried to be around my friends dogs and i'm fine until they come up to me, that's when i just freeze...

Are there any deaf real estate agents?

I don't know what state you live in, but in Illinois the Real estate classes are 45 classroom hours, then you take a test to pass the class. You have 2 chances to pass the test. After that you take the state exam ( 3 chances to pass that one). I just took my state exam and passed it (on the...

    Its Not The Parents Fault....

Good point Cloggy. It takes babies about a year or so to talk. In that first year it's all about the intake of speech. When a dhh child gets their CI activated they are like newborn baby. That's why it takes time until they understand that speech has a meaning to it.

Question for Parents of CI children

I don't regret my decision one bit. It's definately a lot of work with the therapists and at home as well, but the outcome is worth every moment of it. Kayla likes going to see her therapist too. It's more like play time for her.

    Pros and cons of Oralism??

Cherri is right, it takes a lot of hard work and patience when choosing the oral method. It also depends on the age of your child and how early you start therapy.

    Pros and cons of Oralism??

Well on the pro side, it gives a way to communicate verbally. It"s a great tool to have and will definately help your daughter in life with certain situations. It really depends on how you want to raise her and on how her surroundings are. Are there any other deaf people in your family? Even...

    Experiences with my daughter.

I'm so happy to hear all the progress Lotte is making! The speech literaly gets better week by week and it's so amazing how natural it comes to them when they are that young. How long has she had her CI now for? Kayla has had it for 3 1/2 years now.

use of device in children or not

Like Neecy said, if they benefit from HAs then there is no need for the CI. In most if not all cases if the deafness is profound, then there will be very little benefit with the HAs. The audiologist will first start with HAs and then go from there.

Once your doctor does yor CI evaluation and you are found to be a candidate, The doctor usually will give you a letter of medical necessity to send out to your insurance. I know thats the case with regular insurance, but i'm not sure about medicare.

Can someone who is severely deaf talk normally?

Well your going to have your own opinion and thats fine. I never said anything negative about sign, all i'm saying is that AV is working for my daughter and listening and speaking has become easier for her to do. Why is that such a crime!! I had her implanted to give her options in life. I...

Can someone who is severely deaf talk normally?

Well from my experience, I've met other dhh kids using this approach who were implanted early and to be honest i was quite amazed at the results. These kids have been in therapy for about 5 years or so and i was quite impressed. Dhh kids are going to lipread no matter what, the AV approach just...

    Its Not The Parents Fault....

You are 100% right Clearsky. I was actually the parent who stated that. The doctors and therapists also make you aware that it takes a lot of hard work and patience when working with your child.

Try using toupee tape to hold it in place. It's 2 sided tape and works great holding my daughters CI in place.
