Deaf in the Militaryn (Video - Subtitled)

And here I thought my spirits would be lifted by this...I am trying to join the Navy, and very frustrated about my hearing disqualifying me.

    oticon streamer

I have a streamer that I got with my Oticon Epoqs. I really didn't use it for the first couple of years because I only had one program set up, but when I started using an FM system for some of my college classes it became indispensable because it's really hard to change the program without it...

    Talking to Employers

Everything I looked into is tech work. Mostly user interface design, since most of the companies at the career fair were looking for engineers or programmers rather than scientists. So the graphic nature of that would mean that customer interaction would probably have to be either face to face...

    Talking to Employers

So, I just went to my first career fair today. I think it went well, I talked to a number of companies, gave out a big stack of copies of my resume, had several people seem really interested in having me work for them. But I can't help but be nervous about the future. I'm going to have to...

    Um. Hi?

Hey. So, uh, I'm new obviously and I guess I'm supposed to introduce myself on here. I'm CJ, I'm 20 and a sophomore at RPI. I'm a pretty typical college guy I guess, classes, homework, fraternity parties, brushing up on my skating skills so I can join in the intramural hockey games, trying to...

    Annoying ignorant hearing people stories

Last semester I was in a professor's office getting help on an assignment. She was clearly frustrated with my lack of understanding of some of the material, and, not wanting her to continue thinking I was goofing off in lecture, I explained why I was missing things and assured her that I was...

Your point of view on marriage. Deaf or hearing?

I was raised as if I could hear (lipreading only, never was taught ASL, wasn't taken to a proper audiologist until I insisted on it after my lack of hearing cost me a job as a teen) due to my parents being in denial. So a short while ago I would have said I'd be more likely to end up with...

Is "Deaf from Birth" a Minority Around Here?

Most likely from birth in my case. Definitely inherited (father and paternal grandfather) but not taken seriously for a very long time because every time I failed a screening someone said "oh, he recently had an ear infection, it's probably that" and didn't look further. So probably but not certain.

Do you guys embrace your hearing loss/deafness?!

I make no effort to hide it. My aids are a plain dark shade for no reason other than that I'm a ginger so bright colors would clash horribly. I'd frankly prefer that people (at conversational range anyway) did see them, because that way they are less surprised/annoyed if I ask them to repeat...

    Newly HOH Horseback Rider

I wouldn't worry too much about riding. I used to ride and never had a problem in spite of having a number of pretty rough falls. The design of my helmet also had straps that happened to end up running across my ears, so a bit of extra protection just by chance. Point is, horses never managed to...
