    Is ASL Music an Oxymoron?

doh, Yes, I could mute the sound but, my main point was with regards to those (people) who are deaf from birth! It would be pompous for me to suggest, even with the sound muted, that I could ever truly gain their perspective. I could try but, I have experienced something (sound) and...

    Is ASL Music an Oxymoron?

As a beginner...I enjoyed her Vlog but, since I am hearing I realize that I will NEVER be able to gain the deaf perspective. "Imagining' deafness is just not the same as not hearing for life! Therefore, as much as I enjoyed the BSL, I could hear the music...DUH! John

    My fave building concept

Hows this for a "re-boot!" I love timberframe construction. Done correctly this type of construction makes a lovely home. Most residences that include some timberframe concepts are not as 'busy' as the Vermont visitors center (shown by the OP). Also, the mortise and tenon joints are all cut by...

    first ASL youtube video

Hi Erica, I just watched your video again and... I thought the lighting was OK! You are WAY more advanced than me! IMHO that is amazing for someone with only two semesters of ASL. Will you lose your hearing completely? I hope not but, it is nice to see you will still pursue your signing goals...

    Video sign practice!

Thanks Erica, Currently I am having trouble with my modem (I only have wireless!) so, once I get that resolved I will PM you. I have to say, you are WAY above my skill level! I would be worried that I might impede your progress or that you would find signing with me B-O-R-I-N-G! Thanks for the...

    Video sign practice!

Hello everyone, As I search for ways to practice signing I began to wonder if there were people (deaf or hearing) on this forum who would be interested in signing to each other via webcam. I even considered asking for some CI's to set up a tutor service that I would be willing to pay for...

    Children Of Deaf Adults!

Thanks for the vote of encouragement "HoHGuyOhio" Currently it seems there are not enough hours in the day. If I practice ASL signs...inevitably my teacher will go over numbers and you learn quickly that the learning curve is almost vertical. Keith's performance was incredible from an ASL...

    Children Of Deaf Adults!

Hello everyone, This past weekend I watched an ASL performance by Keith Wann! Since I am only a first year ASL student I did not understand most of it. However, it appears to me that attaining that level of proficiency would be very difficult for a hearing person aspiring to be an...

    Receptive abilities!!

@ Chris (CI) Thanks for the advice! I should note that after my first test I wanted my teacher to see what I had rehearsed for the test. I signed in ASL a different 'expressive' sign set with the proper structure as demonstrated to me by a third year student. So I put a video of BOTH...

Don't stop talking, laughing in class

I agree with the OP. I am taking sign (ASL) from a deaf person and feel regret when my classmates just chat away! I have decided that I am no longer going to respond in voice...ever!! Otherwise, it is too easy to 'default' back to speech for those of us struggling. John

    Receptive abilities!!

Hello Everyone, I had my first ASL test last week and did poorly on the receptive portion:tears: I visited the sign lab right before class and it helped on the 'expressive' part of the test but, hurt on the 'receptive' part!! After all of this I need to ask everyone on here if they can...

You have to be Deaf to understand

Thanks for sharing the poems. Please understand that just because we hear, doesn't mean we listen! IMHO communication difficulties/problems are more frequent in the Hearing community than the Deaf community. Also, even for the hearing, 90% of communication is visual but, those of us that...
