MIT Student Turns Hearing Loss Into Knowledge Gain

I disagree somewhat, because I believe the same goes for other languages. I've never heard of any language that you can directly and precisely translate to English word for word. If there were such thing, there would be no errors in online translators; you do have to "approximate" other...

How old were you when you had your first date?

No, not at all... umm... I guess, I chose a good picture for my avatar? Thanks :) I don’t know, nothing I can think of. That’s kind of why I was posting this. If it counts, I was kind of a social reject in high school; that might be it. Thanks for the compliment/the advice...! I’m in...

    anyone have facebook?

I gotta disagree, there are so many applications on Facebook now that make it way better than Myspace. I think it has to do with the number of friends you have on either site, though. If you have more friends on myspace but fewer on facebook, naturally you'd prefer myspace.

    Moans and Groans

Yeah I think that may be true... my 7-year-old hearing sister watches TV with CCs with me and when she's bored, reads them all out loud before the characters on TV can say it, and tries to beat them. I won't tell her to stop, she's reading! =P

    Moans and Groans

Yeah, my school follows it, I just had to let remind them a couple times. The caption-activating part was sort of my fault, because I didn’t know we’d be tested on the screenings so I didn’t even bother to remind them to turn on the CCs (the videos are SO BORING. I’d rather sleep!) Haha, me...

    Moans and Groans

Yeah that's true, I understand that they mostly don't realize it, but that still doesn't make much of a difference to me because it doesn't change the fact that the subtitles annoy them. It makes me feel almost burdensome, and the complaints just piss me off, grrr...!! It kind of reminds me of...

How old were you when you had your first date?

Question for deaf/HOH people... I might be a bit younger than some of the people here (I'm 18..?) but I've never been on a date in my life, nor has anyone showed any kind of interest in/attraction towards me. Just wondering when most of you started dating or were in a relationship of any form. I...

    Moans and Groans

I am SO sick and tired of hearing people becoming annoyed whenever I need to activate the CCs on something we're all watching. It happened most recently when I was in a lecture at my school, the second half of which was used to watch a video screening like we'd done for the past 5 weeks. Only...

    from a hear-er

from what I know... basically, yes... but also with things like little words: to, and, the, is, etc. and even adding possessive form to words... like for example if you wanted to sign "kim's hat" you'd fingerspell Kim and do this little apostrophe-S sort of thing, then sign "hat". Well I guess...

Don't you hate it when hearing people being ignorant about deaf customers?

Hmmm well I do know a deaf woman (who taught me ASL) whose situation is kind of the opposite of what you described: she's the one who works in customer service at a grocery store, but she has to interact with hearing people. Yep, using a pencil and paper. (And no, she doesn't stock shelves -...

Umm, hey, so... am I deaf?

thanks for the input... gosh I feel for you. but I can't relate entirely because I still get a LOT of help from my hearing aid. It still seems like i'm HOH, that's partially why I was asking this because I don't notice ANY difference when I still wear my BTE.

Umm, hey, so... am I deaf?

No, she just doesn't know. On applications for help at school and whatnot she keeps telling me to fill out Hard of Hearing (when "deaf" is also an option), that's all I mean.

I have questions for deaf people who goes or went to colleges

I'm a Vancouverite myself, and I'm in my first year at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. Going to Gally would make me an International student, so I didn't even consider it. If I wanted to go to a school in another country, I would have picked CalArts to get my degree - especially since I...

    hi,im new,and i have a question

Not really, unless you mean local signs ie. names of places/cities for instance (there are probably signs that change within the states from place to place, too, though). But in Canada we use ASL as well, just not necessarily in Quebec. I can't think of any specific examples.

Umm, hey, so... am I deaf?

Hi...I think you misunderstood me, I have no problem with acceptance. My own mother has told me "you're not deaf." I have no problem being deaf, I'm just questioning the difference between being "profoundly deaf" and "profoudly hard of hearing" if there is one. yep that definitely helps, I'm...

    College teacher dilemma

I can't say I've had any rude encounters with my instructors yet. But I'm a freshman at an art school in B.C. Canada, and the teachers haven't been very helpful (in more of an ignorant, oh-yeah-I-forgot kind of way). I was encouraged by our disability resources coordinator to fill out a Request...

    from a hear-er

hey, am I the only one that's okay with this? Well I think you might not have made your intentions clear or stated it properly. Yeah, asking her how well she can hear/her degree of hearing loss would be a no, especially right off the bat. but it's perfectly acceptable to at least ask someone how...

Umm, hey, so... am I deaf?

Yesss exactly! your hearing loss seems very similar to mine. Thanks for the input =) I'd say more like just "good," it's not really magnificent or antthing. But better than a lot of deaf people, which is mostly what has confused me so much. Thanks again for your help =)
