Sooo confused about whether or not to get a CI

uggh yeah, my audiologist keeps trying to convince me that it's the earmold that's the problem; but my earmold at least SEEMS to have a perfect fit. Although I have to admit, the area of the earmold that prevents feedback the most, is the one that consistently causes soreness/scars my skin. but...

    when was deaf culture 'discovered'

Did you read my post? You probably did/already knew about Deaf President Now but I'm just checking to see that it wasn't overlooked; it probably wasn't the earliest incident, anyway. But I mean, according to wiki (I know, I know, unreliable source) it is still "a watershed moment that raised...

    I want to vent!

if i can dumb it down for you just a bit, the original poster clearly said VENT in the title. they're not trying to find a solution to a huge wordly dysfunction, it's just an expression of anger. They're looking for similar experiences, maybe... i doubt they even sought advice, don't even try to...

Sooo confused about whether or not to get a CI

basically Audiofuzzy, I want to be able to hear things without having to ask for 3+ repeats. I don't lipread - I do need to look at a person's face, but I always make eye contact. at one point my BTE was like, a godsend and I picked up everything but just for a couple of years. also I have a...

    Speech on deafness

I suppose that the choosing of a target audience would completely alter the aim of your speech; so for instance if you said, "I'm here to inform you, the fire fighters, about deafness!" then the thesis of your speech would be focused on deaf awareness in relation to .. fires, basically. All...

    when was deaf culture 'discovered'

I think Interpretator clarified most of that... I don't know much about its initiation but, like any culture, it doesn't just begin with a BANG. But I do know that an important movement that raised lots of awareness and probably had a major impact on Deaf Culture would have to be DPN of course

Sooo confused about whether or not to get a CI

Ok this answers my questions pretty well! I'm not entirely sure about some posts since I think part of my post was overlooked -- my candidacy has already been determined by my ENT; the thing I didn't do is meet up & discuss more about CIs with a CI specialist, and what I'm doing now is what they...

Deaf volunteering in the community (local fire dept, etc etc)

I don't know about a fire department... but I've volunteered at a summer day camp, chasing after kids and whatnot, playing games with them, helping supervise on field trips, basic first aid (in a licensed childcare center, though, ie. with paid staff and the volunteers were just an extra eye)...

Sooo confused about whether or not to get a CI

I'll start by saying i've lost my hearing gradually over the years. Here's a sort of history of my hearing loss and how it was initiated if you need to refer to it but if not just skip to the next paragraph - diagnosed with brain tumour at 4, surgically removed at 5, underwent radiation...

What was school like for you?

I couldn't agree more. Hmm does anyone ever realize that, within this sort of social hierarchy that exists in public schools, the people willing to "give you a chance" are the "desperate" ones, i.e. (at the risk of insulting some people maybe), the loners. But I don't mean to suggest that these...

What was school like for you?

same here Mainstream all the way for me (hearing classes). elementary school (K-7) was pretty lame. bullied since the 4th grade (year after I started losing my hearing, when I first obtained an FM... how coincidental) but kind of stopped the year that we "graduated" (grade 7). no accommodation...

    Wanted to vent!

i don't know if this has a lot to do with what's being said here, but I was at the audiologist yesterday, and saw a pamphlet that was titled: "WHY YOUR BABY NEEDS HEARING AIDS NOW." ... I read it... lamest thing I've seen in years.

    sleep and ha's

same here, I don't bother to remove it if I'm taking a nap but I find it painful to sleep on my bte and, of course, the whistling is really annoying. plus it is really unhealthy to not allow your ear some air at night, and I'm telling you this from my own personal experience. what Audiofuzzy...

"Oh, you speak so well!" and other annoying comments

The thing I hate the most is the general attitude of my hearing peers - at high school and in college, everyone's very social and whatnot, so obviously, you have people coming up to you all the time saying "hi" and making small talk. After a while of conversing, I have to ask them to [insert...

How old were you when you had your first date?

the ASL class at my high school wasn't really a regular class and it only existed for 3 years in the 26 years my high school had existed for. Also my school was one of two schools in the entire PROVINCE that offered ASL as a class and they didn't want to have a huge number of students since it...

How old were you when you had your first date?

I'm surprised at myself for saying this, but I think I agree with that. In all the ASL classes I've been in, there was only 1 hearing male ever, and he already knew ASL because his younger brother is deaf. The other males were 1 deaf, 2 HoH, and there were at least 10 hearing females (3 that...

    Moans and Groans

Regardless of whether or not it's Elton John singing it in the movie, the singer is male. I'm still pretty convinced it was a mistake =P
