CAPD terminology (Audi says I'm "hearing impaired.")

I disagree Jillio. For one thing the articles refer to the OHC which are located in the cochlea. BTW, we don't have to agree. I explained why I believe what I've read and provided some longer articles available on the web. You stated what you believe -- I think we can leave it at that.

If you are like me, you are rarely in soundbooth type conditions. :) So it's probably not worth it to tell most people that you can hear very well in quiet if its never that quiet when you see them anyway.

CAPD terminology (Audi says I'm "hearing impaired.")

Just want to say that I strongly agree with all of the above. I've been diagnosed as HH and not APD and I know that my ability to hear varies wildly. It depends on how many people are near by, how loudly they are talking, how far away they are, how awake I am, what their voice pitches are...

Going deaf in one ear randomly?

I've heard from other folk's experience and also my own experience one time that if you have a sudden change in hearing loss its recommended to see an ENT or neurotologist immediately (same day if possible). Depending on your other symptoms and history its likely that doctors will opt to try...

That is fantastic! Good luck on the exam. :)

CAPD terminology (Audi says I'm "hearing impaired.")

Anij, I'm glad you posted because I changed my mind. I think it would be too much for most people to get into CAPD. In fact based on my experience with many hearing people, I would not try to explain it to most hearing people. Some of them can get nasty and besides, often it's better to keep...

CAPD terminology (Audi says I'm "hearing impaired.")

I did leave out the 8th cranial nerve (aka the vestibulocochlear nerve) because my understanding was that its function is to only transfer sound and balance information from the ear to the brain, and to also transfer instructions to the cochlea from the brain. So I did lump it into "nerve...

CAPD terminology (Audi says I'm "hearing impaired.")

I probably misunderstood your post. I think now you are saying that CAPD is "pure word deafness" and I originally thought you were saying that the neurological disorder where people perceive hearing words out of the order that they are spoken is "pure word deafness".

CAPD terminology (Audi says I'm "hearing impaired.")

Your audi's explanation makes a lot of sense. Thanks for sharing it. :) I and most other people with hearing loss also have a problem hearing in noise. I think its interesting that we have similar problems for different reasons. Just for the heck of it I'll try to summerize some posts...

    Michelle Obama knows ASL!

I fell for it. Up until TWA posts anyway. :)

CAPD terminology (Audi says I'm "hearing impaired.")

That's a great explanation -- thanks. FWIW, I also agree with Frisky Feline's suggestion. Interesting -- thanks! I don't agree with the specialists who decided to name it that -- but this isn't the first time I disagreed with specialists. :)

Would it be fair to say that CAPD is like dyslexia but for hearing words not reading words?

Personally, I think a judge should have the option to order an abuser to pay for a security alarm system and bodyguards.

Going deaf in one ear randomly?

Racher, your post got me curious. I googled "fluctuating hearing loss" and got a lot of results. Apparently there are a lot of possibilities -- I know that is probably what you don't want to hear. I also know that isn't exactly your symptom -- but I didn't get good results when I tried to...

Home Security System services for deaf?

Evo, that's a great story! And I'm glad it worked out well for you. But if your "strange feeling" wouldn't have kicked in, you would only have had a tape to give to your local police. You still might not have gotten your stuff back. Not everybody has a reliable "strange feeling", so a...

    Michelle Obama knows ASL!

Well, if we are going to be serious about this for a moment (I admit its hard :) ), I'm not sure that Ms. Obama is signing 'vagina', although it looks close. Per two dictionaries I looked at, the sign is made with two L fingers -- the middle through little fingers are NOT interlaced...

    Michelle Obama knows ASL!

I bet the First Lady would be embarrassed if she knew. :giggle: Does anyone else think that is just a strange photo to have on a magazine cover? I would bet that the photographer shot tens of photos of Ms. Obama if not hundreds. Leaving ASL out of it, that is an unusual way to hold ones'...

lol people in my house are crazy....

Tapping shoulders, flashing overhead lights and waving your hand to get the D/d/HH person's attention all works. If somebody threw something at me I think I'd go on the war path and toss everything in the room right back at them! And a nurse yelled at you in your face? Really? I'd think...

    Not know what name this...

Glad to hear that. I hope you dont need it, but if possible, still have a plan B -- just in case. Sometimes I think having a plan B makes it less likely that you will actually need to use it.
