    Cochlear implant debate

Let me try again. If parents choose to have their deaf child implanted with a CI, they should also work to learn sign, teach sign, and pressure the school district to teach sign (total communication) to their child. There will be times when the child will not be able to use the CI. Implant...

    Cochlear implant debate

The debate has pretty well resolved itself, at least on this board, if you do your research. Sign is still important for children born deaf, because of times when there is no access to the implant. Because fluent sign is nearly impossible for the late-deafened, CI is routine and accepted.

Hoh who has purple hearing aids!

My molds are clear, but my HA's are fuchsia.

Do you have a service dog for the deaf?

I have been told that since loyal dogs do this with little or no training, there is no help available. It is only available for those with little or no hearing, even with HA's. I would much rather have a dog for comfort than buy bed-shakers and flashing lights. I do have a specialized phone...

"why would they use him and not just a hearing asl interpeter???"

I think they ought to hire primary language signers who can do it that way for any emergency broadcast. They can get the message across easier. For a person with minimal knowledge of sign, severe hearing loss, and anxiety, it impresses the message better.

If Deaf never had sign language, would you hearing still want to know us??

Agreed. The entire premise of the thread is false. I haven't read the whole thread, but-- if there wasn't a formal sign language, deaf people would invent it. This has happened in many pockets of hereditary deafness. People have an innate need to communicate. It is hard-wired into us. Look...

Did you know that people who suffer hearing loss are more prone to developing dementia?

I suspect that age-related hearing loss (usually not in the range most of us experience) is a symptom of Alzheimer's. My mother lost her senses of taste and smell early in the process. However, I intend on keeping up with my progressive loss, and my intellectual pursuits, just in case there...

How Do You Wake Up For Work?

I have a loud alarm clock which is a siren sound, when I need to get up early. An east-facing window with the curtains open would be better than my south-facing window. But usually it is pain meds wearing off.

Am i the only one that hates their hearing aids?

That was one of your first problems in getting used to them. I have Starkeys. The rocker switch on my left has three settings, normal, fan suppression, and telecoil. The rocker switch on my right has volume control. I have said before that mine are physically set up as if for a person with a...

Am i the only one that hates their hearing aids?

:laugh2: They are talking about selling HA's over-the-counter set up so that the customer can adjust to their own liking. No audiologist-- no nothing. But those OTC HA's won't be the kind we use, for some reason. :cool2:

Am i the only one that hates their hearing aids?

The sound of fans masks what I want to hear. I have a setting that lowers that reduces the volume of those frequencies so I can hear other things.

Then get you audi to turn them down. He can also lower the amplification on the frequencies which irritate you. Gradually he can then turn them up. Simple. Just because the tuning matches your audiogram profile doesn't mean that they are perfectly tuned.

Is utah school for the deaf a good school?

There are some cultural issues in Utah. Might be good to thoroughly check out the local school district, too, before making a decision.

Am i the only one that hates their hearing aids?

I prefer my HA's over "please speak a little louder, get fairly close, and let me see your lips." If it is a guy, it sounds like a come-on. Of course, if there is a bushy mustache involved, I don't know what to do.

Am i the only one that hates their hearing aids?

I was also unsure. However, if they are new, he would have a current audi to go to with that question. Therefore, I went with that assumption. Whichever; he needs to see a professional in real life.

Am i the only one that hates their hearing aids?

If your HA's have been sitting on a shelf for that long, the first thing you need to do is go to an audiologist, and get your hearing tested. They are highly unlikely to have the equipment and software which would retune them. You will need new ones, and you will likely be much happier with...

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

When they challenge you on that, ask them if they find it difficult to follow a Strauss piece when others are playing Rock and Jazz at the same time and volume. Hearing aids only approximate normal sound.

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

I hope you won't let having a hearing loss be your entire identity. Everyone is multi-dimensional, and should not allow themselves to be a label. OTOH, I just got my hair restyled, short on the sides, and the usual 2.5 inches on top. Now I get to show off my fuchsia HA's.
