    Mad diabetic

I'm not saying the government should shut down the existing companies, just provide them with a little competition. I would expect the project to generate a little much-needed revenue. Our healthcare system isn't so purely capitalist, though, is it? It's already socialized, just in a way that...

You are correct... as far as that goes. I've heard, though, that Canada and Britain have crappy healthcare when compared to countries like Holland and Switzerland. Also, I'll repeat a point I made earlier: socialized or not, the medical industry will continue to burden society with unreasonable...

    Mad diabetic

I get you. I think we should have socialized medicine. I just think that ensuring access to medical care is only one part of the solution. But somebody has to pay for it, and regardless of who that is, and as long as it is unreasonably priced, society as a whole suffers. If we really were...

    Mad diabetic

I sympathize. There are too many people, like you, becoming casualties of our chaotic healthcare system.

    Mad diabetic

If I may get off on a tangent here, I think that our current battle over healthcare almost solely revolves around who's going to pay for medical services. Almost never does anyone talk about how much those services cost and why. The reason medical care is such a burden on our society is that...

    Hearing people who join alldeaf...

I'm kind of hyperbolic, so take what I said with a grain of salt. I probably should not have originated this thread, but my good sense is usually in suspension until AFTER I screw up. That being said, why ASL? Do you have a deaf family member, or do you just like the language?

    Hearing people who join alldeaf...

I was speaking mostly about hearing people with no impending hearing loss and no connection to the deaf community (or to anyone with a serious hearing loss, for that matter). You don't fit that description, of course.

    Hearing people who join alldeaf...

Yeah, but you have a hearing issue. Hence, this is a place for you, regardless of how often you post.

    Hearing people who join alldeaf...

Note: Interpreters and other hearing people are excepted, of course. How do deaf and hoh members feel about hearing people who join Alldeaf and are never heard from again outside of Introduce Yourself? Most of them don't seem to know any deaf people and say they're "learning ASL" and "looking...

    Allergies worsen deafness?

Autoimmune Inner Ear Disease can be exacerbated by allergies - to such an extent that allergy shots have allowed some patients to be weened off of steroids when nothing else did the trick. What happened to the hearing in your deaf ear?

    How did you go deaf?

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

Perhaps we should all just learn to sign and create the world of the "little d" deaf.

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

I still have normal hearing in my left ear. The hearing in my right ear is normal up to a little past 3k hertz. Somewhere between 3k and 4k, my thresholds dip down (or is it up?) into the fifties. I suffer from hearing loss "attacks" that can last anywhere from twenty minutes to well over ten...

If there were a cure for hearing loss would you take it

I figured that's what he was talking about. Personally, I think the Deaf Community will be around for a long time. As I know you're well aware, cochlear implants are an imperfect means of treating hearing loss. They simply don't work as well or at all for a large portion of the deaf. I think...

    Cochlear Implant Explantation

That's good to know. I recently read that long time users of ABIs do better with speech recognition than was previously thought.

    Cochlear Implant Explantation

Why were you given a cochlear implant if you had NF2? Did you have a another condition causing sensorineural hearing loss before being diagnosed?

    Hello, Everyone.

Hi, Marissa! I think we found the right place. You already have me at a disadvantage. I'm not too good at either.

If there were a cure for hearing loss would you take it

No doubt life is hard for deaf people. That reality will likely become painfully real for me in the next few years. I've never had the occasion to communicate with a deaf person, but you have to interact with a multitude of hearing people every day. It's frustrating in a way I can't yet imagine...
