New gene-delivery therapy restores partial hearing, balance in deaf mice

"It" is always "years away," and "more research" is always needed, and... none of it ever comes to pass. The studies are forgotten, and it's business as usual. There's also a (largely) effective way to treat MS that's been the subject of more than one experiment, but I doubt this treatment will...

A Thread About Absolutely Nothing! Part III

Is it just me, or does Bruce Jenner look even MORE like a man now that he's dressing as a woman?

A Thread About Absolutely Nothing! Part III

I thought it was nice of her. I suppose he felt a little less out of place with her there, even if she isn't Dad.

    Women's march....

It would have been a lot more likely if a certain someone had been elected president in 2016.

    Women's march....

That's rational. WW3 would have been very bad for women.

    Women's march....

+1 for the small towns. Cities are for visiting, like Mount Rushmore or something.

    Women's march....

A word of advice: profanity will be second (or maybe first) nature to your children if you continue to talk that way in front of them, and they'll have to suppress it as long as they live. My thoughts are a whirlwind of swear words today because my father and uncle cursed so much in my presence...

Identity in the d/deaf hoh world

Welcome. My situation is similar to yours. Have you asked your doctor about autoimmune inner ear disease? I've read that many cases of bilateral Meniere's are probably immune mediated.

    I love him, but....!

You could make a deal with him. Ask him if there's anything you do that gets on his nerves. If he can come up with something you could easily change, tell him you'll do so in exchange for him saying things in a less irritating way. I realize you shouldn't have to do this, but it might be an...

What did you learn today? Part II

I learned not to use as many anchos and pasillas in my homemade enchilada sauce. Oh, and not to toast them. It's still pretty bad.

    Anyone here like me??

Wondering when the next attack will occur saps pretty much all of the enjoyment out of life. It's hard. Were most of your losses the result of these episodes? Or was it more gradual? Do you still have some residual hearing? If so, I've discovered a couple of things that seem to help prevent the...

    Anyone here like me??

I met two or three other AIED patients when I went to the House Clinic. The blood test you took was probably to detect something called Heat Shock Protein 70 (HSP70). That's how I found out I have it, too. There is some controversy regarding HSP70 as a marker for AIED, though. Treatment? My...
