    Early Implantation

\ On topic....I only have the one quote you put in your post. IT's interesting, but I wonder how far they're going to go for early implantation. With the article somewhere else that said some babies begin to test as having more hearing after a few months it may not be that bad to wait...

    Early Implantation

Rick's quote: Early Implantation -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As those who have been actively involved in the cochlear implant community, understand the issue and have personal experience with cochlear implanted children have stated...

My daughter wants to come home.

My daughters school sends the kids home every weekend. I thought that was pretty much the norm now a days. Guess I was wrong. :) Oh to add, if you want your daughter home every weekend your home school district should be transporting her to and from school so they could bring her home...

Aren't we wasting time with HAs...

I know Dr. Shallop. He's head of the CI implant section at Mayo. Very nice man, helped me get my CI even after testing showed that I heard to much. Thank goodness for those who listen. :)

    N00b Questions about CIs

Actually I make less 'modifications to my daily life then I did when I used HA's. Life is just so much eaiser when you actually hear. :)

    Early Implantation

So you agree 100% with any philosopy of and group you belong to? Doesn't matter if you pay dues or not. You never disagree with any organization you belong to? If You pay dues you never would dream of disagreeing with the decisions made etc. etc etc? I doubt it very much .

Aren't we wasting time with HAs...

I believe they developed the curved array to presevse some hearing. Not sure exactly why since I really don't think a HA would do that much with what is left. :) Heres an article on the nucleus hybrid array which would be used for people with high frequency losses. (mine was a reverse...

Sounds like you're talking about the hybrid (I think) CI. One which would have you useing a CI and a HA for the same ear....to much stuff on one ear. Mine is just the regurlar one. The new one would have been useless for me since my greatest loss was low frequencies.

My understanding is the reason the Freedom array is curved is to reduce the impact when inserted, thus perserving some of the hearing. In my case the hearing is still there but really not very useful.

Aren't we wasting time with HAs...

It is quite possible to have residule hearing with a CI. I do. I can actually understand speech if it is spoken directly into the ear , not sure exactly how loud my husband speaks but it is possible. Now how long it will last I don't know. But I did even test as hearing lower frequencies...

Aren't we wasting time with HAs...

I don't know Fuzzy. I do prefer the CI over the sound of the HA. But it is more cost intially so insurance companies aren't going to pay for something when a cheaper alternative if available. Perhaps time will change things regarding the use of a CI earlier. But for now the many options...

Sooo confused about whether or not to get a CI

    1. I used both when first activated. Left ear CI , right HA. My expericence I felt that the HA helped me adjust to CI. and the CI clarified what was coming trhough the HA. But this is probably an individual thing. :) 2. I lost my hearing gradually. It had gotten to the point where I...

Aren't we wasting time with HAs...

THe CI's are freedom, med-el and advanced bionics auria. a baha is a bone anchored hearing aide. They place a peg in your skull allow the bone to grow around it for a few months then attach the HA part to the peg. They are used when the middle ear is the problem and the cochlea works...

Aren't we wasting time with HAs...

Doing well is so 'subjective'. In quiet testing conditions I did 'well'. In real life it sucked rocks big time. (oh and I still have some hearing in the implanted ear, hs to be really loud sound but it is there) Also the amount one hears immediately seems to depend on many factors to. I...

Aren't we wasting time with HAs...

Just to clarify the point about failure. It isn't that the signal doesn't get to the cochlea. The internal part of the device rarely fails. It's checked before you even leave the surgical room to see if the electrodes are working. The 'failure' is mostly problems with the human wearing...

Aren't we wasting time with HAs...

Well because the HA can do enough for a person with a mild loss. Or even a moderate loss so they should and will still be the first option. Having said that when one gets into the severe/profound range many don't do that great with the HA. I think they really should change the criteria...

    Highlands's CI journey

I use the Freedom. Well at first the noise will kill you. :) even with the smart sounds. My expericnce will not be yours of course since we all react and learn to adapt to the new sounds in our own way and time. The freedom does use 2 mics. and the different programs use those mics...

    CI Moments

Dear A2 you are welcome to have some of my rain. We've had very few dry days in the past 2 months. But then again I did survive that really nasty hot spell back in the mid 90's.

    CI Moments

So funny R2, I've been listening to books on cd in my car on the way to and from work. Now I'm hearing words pronounced differently then I have pronounced them. And many people around me pronounce them more like I do, so I'm thinking it has something to do with regional differences, who...

    CI Moments

One way to practice hearing speech would be to go to the library and get books on tape and the book that would go with it and read along. Many here have done so after activation. They start with kids books. Hearing something while reading it would at least be a cheap way to see if the speech...
