How Jewish tradition marginalized the deaf

I think you should say "in her/his experience" rather than generalizing to a whole population. I am Deaf, quadriplegic, and Jewish. I have been a member of a conservative synagogue all my life. I am a welcomed member, and have been given a number of honors. I am counted in a minyan, and...

    Last Movie You Watched?

The local theatre sponsored a special open captioned viewing of Twilight: Eclipse last week. Nice action. The books were better (of course).

Man With Alzheimer's Dies After Drinking Detergent

Regardless of how we define "late stage", it's very sad.

    A shout out to everyone!

Wow, TE, it seems you keep jumping from the frypan into the fire. Most Deaf do not consider themselves disabled or "handicapped", except by the uneducated opinions of others. Perhaps you might browse some of the postings by the true experts on this forum, the Deaf and HOH community. It...

What can you teach the deaf?

Could you enlighten us as to your credentials? What makes you an "expert"? And what is the purpose of your posting? I assume you are referring to "hearing" as the audiological system and not the population which can hear, correct?

Deaf awareness at a place in an hearing envirnoment

Every month we have an ASL social at a local bar/restaurant. They know there are 30+ Deaf or signers there, and treat us just the same as the hearing clientele...badly! Not sure why we keep going :hmm:

From Oral Interpreting - Being an Oral Interpreter for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing "Oral interpreting is less common, but is still a recognized subspecialty of interpreting. The oral interpreter simply silently mouth interprets speech for the nonsigning deaf consumer. In addition, an oral...

    Hearing Impaired Term?

I wonder if your niece is autistic, which is Not something to giggle about, I agree. I was joking by saying Jillio was practicing audism, or discrimination against Deaf and signers. Nothing could be further from the truth. Sorry for the confusion.

    Hearing Impaired Term?

How terribly audistic of you, Jillio :giggle: Agreed for the majority, Shel, but not all. There are a few enlightened medical professionals out there.

Advances in Technology and a Return to Medicalization

Jillio, I also see the pendulum swinging back to medicalization of deafness. And technology is responsible in a large part, I believe. When one applies to medical school, one writes a personal statement. Nearly 90% of those say that the applicant wants to go into medicine to "help people". We...

right to terps in private treatment

Just curious...you are new to the Deaf world, living in New Zealand, and coming to the US and wanting an interpreter. Are you needing an oral interpreter, or have you learned ASL?

    Perfecting lipreading skills?

I disagree. Personal experience is not always generalizable. I am late deafened, and like Botts, I am not very good. I speech read a little with my family, but prefer ASL. I don't miss as much information that way.

Can't hear, can't sign either - social outcast!

I may refer to myself as a quad or gimp or wheeler in joke, but I'm offended by others using terms like wheelchair bound, crippled or handicapped. I should be tolerant as I know it comes from ignorance and not meanness. I find the only things that "handicap" me are other people's attitudes...
