Why should deaf people be around hearing people instead of O N L Y deaf people

I'm not denying that there are some who are militant Deaf, but they are not the majority. As for the "not deaf enough" issue, I think it's been said enough that was not the driving force behind the protests, though I know some people did feel that way. However, I'm friends with some people...

Why should deaf people be around hearing people instead of O N L Y deaf people

I understand why some people think that Gallaudet is full of "Deaf militants," but it really depends who you ask. I've been to Gallaudet many times and will be going there this fall, and no one has ever been rude or disrespectful to me upon discovering I am hearing. Kappa Gamma was one of the...

Deaf foster teenagers will get group home

As the article stated, most of them have issues besides not having a place to live. If they have severe emotional/behavioral issues, sending them to a deaf school is NOT the solution.

    How does it work

That actually surprises me quite a bit. While my exposure to the Deaf world is without a doubt less than yours, I've known a small handful of people who used CS, including someone on these boards (I'll let her talk about it if she wants) and also a co-worker.

Stereotypes of the deaf and hard of hearing

Quite a few of my friends have had similar experiences on planes or in museums. Makes me giggle every time. :)

    For INTERPRETERS: A Wishlist

I interpret for two boys, ages 15 and 16, who sign like boys at that age talk: A series of semi-coherant "mumbles," incomplete sentences/thoughts, etc. This is hard enough to voice when your hands are free. Please don't hold a pencil in one hand and a piece of paper in the other, then get...

EVIDENCE of being deaf with Hearing Aid device

Agreed. A friend of mine has an implant, and cites that as a large reason he considers himself culturally Deaf. He could have said, "Forget Deaf. I'm going to the hearing world," but he didn't. I used the analogy of someone converting to a new religion: Often times he or she will be more...

New Marlee Matlin Book on Sale at Harris Communications

She grew up in a total communication program, actually, but she uses ASL now. Her alma matter (I'm hoping I didn't screw that up) is pretty well known for their deaf program, and they tend to do well in the Gallaudet-sponsored academic bowl competitions.

    CODA interpreters

I don't like it when it's said in front of other people, whether they're people I work with or not. I also understand that sometimes uncomfortable situations come up, like last week when I was interpreting a banquet for my work and a deaf co-worker had to say something on stage. We'd already...

EVIDENCE of being deaf with Hearing Aid device

This has nothing to do with your post, but I just thought I'd let you know Eyeth isn't the one who wrote that, as Eyeth is deaf.

EVIDENCE of being deaf with Hearing Aid device

The information below is an excerpt from The Gallaudet Research Institute's website: For the 17-year-olds and the 18-year-olds in the deaf and hard of hearing student norming sample, the median Reading Comprehension subtest score corresponds to about a 4.0 grade level for hearing students...

State Summary Report of Data from 2003-2004: Annual Survey of Deaf and Hard of H

That is exactly what I was wishing for!!! I'd love to do my own research along those lines. Indeed, I'm thinking a lot of it has to do with the abolition of deaf programs in favor of fully mainstreamed or oral programs. When I was in elementary school in the early-mid nineties, we had a...

EVIDENCE of being deaf with Hearing Aid device

I'm in agreement. My own friends and I discuss this topic frequently; they add their own experiences growing up in "the system," while I add my experiences working in the deaf education field. It's a heated topic, that's for sure.

State Summary Report of Data from 2003-2004: Annual Survey of Deaf and Hard of H

I was admittedly a bit shocked to see that my home state (Illinois) was almost 50% oral programs. I can't believe how much things have changed in the past several years.

Amazon's used books are good too. After shipping and handling, I paid under $8. Quite the deal!

    Wired for sound- B. Biderman

I would really like to read "Wired for Sound." I actually heard about I elsewhere and was trying to find it at my local library earlier today, but they don't have it, and neither to any of the libraries within the Interlibrary Loan consortium. Disappointing. Hopefully I'll remember this when...

    If there WAS 100% cure...

I don't see what's selfish about wanting to be able to switch hearing on and off. You admitted that you often wish you could turn your hearing off- is that selfish? No, of course not. It's not like people are breaking down their audiologists' doors screaming, "Give me hearing now, damnit! But...

Sign up for people who strongly believes in ASL for d/Deaf children s rights.

That isn't "oralist stuff." Are you seriously denying that having spoken and written English skills doesn't benefit deaf people?

    My decision about GU

I agree wholeheartedly with that statement! I realize Gallaudet isn't the right place for everyone, but I do think it has a special something that shouldn't go unrecognized by university and college deaf students everywhere. I know several friends of mine have started considering going to...

Why my wife and I want our children to hear and speak a little.

So anyway, back to the original topic... Fragmenter, I think it's awesome that you and your wife are ignoring the cries of those who find your decision controversial and doing what you think is best for your children. I'm not a parent, but I have an incredible amount of respect for those who...
