    Deaf Project for School

You're welcome! :D I don't have any stories, I've always made friends easily. Oh wait, I do remember one, but it doesn't affect me directly. I was mainstreamed at a middle school, and the ONLY Deaf student there. One day, one of my friends came up and told me that she had overheard a...

Is it OK for an ASL teacher to be Hearing?

IMO it's all about the ability and desire to teach, not just the fluency. At my college, it's only the Deaf that teach ASL 1 - 4, and a hearing woman who is CODA (her father's a well-known member of the Deaf community) teaches Sim-Com. At my hearing friend's university - which is about 2...

    Deaf Project for School

Interesting topic! Off the top of my head: There is still the idea that speech = intelligence, so for those of us who choose not to speak, we are seen as inferior, even subhuman by some. We can't: read, drive, write, laugh (my mother's first protest when she found out I was deaf - "But...

    One of my favorite jokes

gotta add. True story. In my jr year of high school, a blonde friend and I went out to try this restaurant, and as we got ready to eat our meal, I had to stop and watch. She was trying to get the ketchup out of a glass bottle, but it wouldn't come out. I finally took pity on her and pointed...

    One of my favorite jokes

WARNING!!! The punchline is a play on words. So there's two sisters. They run a ranch, and one day they decide it's time to buy a bull. One of the sisters goes to the county farm stock fair, and there she sees the perfect bull. After agreeing on the price, she asks if the seller can...

Can *all* deaf people read and write?

Yeah, when a hearing person misspells a word (like hear for here or your for you're), I just look at the context. My husband is TERRIBLE with that. :giggle: As for l337 (elite-speak), I first heard of it from my ex-boyfriend and I learned it pretty well. If I see it in a word, I can figure...

Can *all* deaf people read and write?

Don't get me started on THAT, Jillio! XD I tolerate phonics at best, but I absolutely DETEST the new testing craze from the 9th circle of Hell known as "DIBELS". :rifle::rifle::rifle: I will admit, though, phonics have been shown in research to be a direct link to gaining literacy in...

OK! I'll do an "in-line" critique to make it easier for the two of us. I have some experience critquing from scribophile.com (you should probably consider joining that site - it is excellent). Text in red & bold are my comments. FIRST...I *LOVE* it!!! I do want to read some more! :D...

Why Would You NOT Choose A CI?

Donno, TechBill. I only know from my friends' experiences. :dunno2: I *THINK* it's always been okay to do the implants on toddlers. Mellinart, :) I hope the CI will work for you! I too have a sensorineural loss, and I can hear so good with my digital hearing aids. I very much doubt a CI...

    New site for deaf writers!!!

Does the site allow for critiquing each other's stories? Like, helping to improve the writing process and/or the written piece itself?

Why Would You NOT Choose A CI?

It just felt like you were not letting me have my own opinion. Everything I state, you question. This is not the thread for that. I never said "parents choose CI for themselves". Re-read my posts. The implantation of young toddlers actually started much earlier - my friends (and I)...
