I Hope my nation turns to Canada.

The Pacific Northwest can be, and often is, very cold AND wet...so the cold, while the temperatures aren't as low as in other parts of the country, just gets right into your bones. Wrong place to move if you want warmer weather.

Hostile society of the hearing people

I agree with this. I think that there are always going to be people who are going to be mean, or rude, or condescending just because they think that they are better than anyone whom they see as "different". It doesn't matter to them what that difference is. I also agree with the people who...

is it normal for deaf people to worry about this?

I can't even imagine being so rude as to tell someone that their breathing was too noisy, or that they chewed loudly. Seriously. I am appalled that anyone would have such bad manners.

Parents: Dying Girl, 7, Taunted by Neighbors in Trenton

What a horrid horrid excuse for a human being. I really hope Karma bites her in the ass.

    Frustrated!!!

I can't even imagine how frustrating that must have been... We dealt with an elementary school teacher when my son was in grade 1 who was really resentful about having a child in a wheelchair in the class... came right out and said that she didn't see why SHE should have to "make accommodations"...

    Similarities in ASL Signs

As a hearing person, I agree with you. I don't know why it is so hard to respond (referring here to spoken English, not ASL) with "You're welcome" when someone says "thank you".

    Which would you choose

If my child was Deaf, I would want the Deaf teacher as well... Slang has no place in a classroom anyhow, as far as I am concerned, and the Deaf teacher can learn the meanings beforehand if there are slang expressions used in the curriculum. Even as a hearing person, I know that I am SO GLAD...

    Frustrated!!!

That is what I am thinking...but that in itself may make it so that the school district will HAVE to get their asses in gear and hire another terp...because they won't be allowed to use Intervenors, or anyone else who isn't certified! *fingers crossed*

    :tears: me, too.

    Wrong word order?

As far as someone in a wheelchair goes, that is too broad. The consideration comes in play with regard to WHY they are in a wheelchair. If someone uses a wheelchair because of a spinal injury then, no, cognition would not be affected. However, someone who uses a wheelchair because of traumatic...

    Frustrated!!!

I am going to be talking to the Union rep on Monday, as well, after reading all the suggestions and comments, and see what they have to say about this. I am a School District employee, and I know there are situations in which we can refuse (without facing disciplinary action) to do certain work...

    Frustrated!!!

I just found out yesterday that here, terps get the exact same rate of pay as other "staff"...somehow they got all put under the same umbrella years ago when our Union was drawing up the contracts, and they still are. Personally I think it's appalling but unless the interpreters all band...

    Frustrated!!!

My comment has NOTHING to to with concern for the hearing students! I think I have been pretty clear that I am upset that the DEAF STUDENT did NOT have the services HE should have had. If asking the teacher to repeat or to slow down would have made me know the language to use, I would have..it...

    Frustrated!!!

Thanks. Unfortunately, because we do live in a smaller town which is not close to a big city at all (2 1/2 hours to the nearest big city) there are not any freelance terps here... I like the idea of videotaping, or at the least, audio taping the classes for him to review later with his...

    Frustrated!!!

This boys parents do, from what I understand, although they use more Signed English than ASL. I did mostly take notes out of necessity...as I told the student, I don't have the skill to interpret for him and, as he is pretty good at lip-reading, I felt that for him to focus on my less-than-ideal...

When is it considered babying your children or just showing love?

I'm glad to know that! I've just known other moms who are REALLY sad about their kids growing up... maybe because my son almost didn't survive, every new leap in independence has been met with a "yay!". I've always treasured all the moments as "one more day", so I don't miss the days past, if...

I Hope my nation turns to Canada.

Canada is a nice place, as is the States... they're different, but each has it's good points and it's flaws.

    deaf parents hearing kids

They may be behind initially, but they can catch up and will often surpass their peers in English! I always got A's in English, even though it was my second language.

    Frustrated!!!

I agree... I hate the way things get handled, and that the people with the power are not people who "get" it. I suggested that this morning... I don't know if it will happen but it might be a better temporary option until they do get someone qualified.
