How do you like the label 'Special Ed's student?

I think there are a lot of kids who are also apathetic towards learning because they HAVEN'T been held back when they should have been. I don't know about other school systems, but here kids don't fail until high school. So if they can't read in grade one or two, they don't get kept back a year...

Hostile society of the hearing people

ok...tried to NOT get mad... but just have to respond. I've snipped everything but those two things that really jumped out at me. This one REALLY got my back up: "and you see yourself as normal. That is fine with me." First of all, my son IS "normal". He just happens to have a physical...

    Thank You :)

I think it's a shame if any hearing people who want to understand/ learn more about Deaf culture leave because someone tells them they are wrong. I know that the ONLY way I can truly understand is to be corrected when I make a mistake...and if that "correction" looks like a slap upside the head...

Hostile society of the hearing people

I have had people ask me why the Deafblind kids I work with need my support... "How can she be Deafblind? She can see (or hear)..." They DON'T get that she has enough of a visual loss, and enough hearing loss that she misses out on vital information, because she can't fill in any gaps with the...

    Frustrated!!!

You know, I wish the general population would get what you just said, about having EQUAL ACCESS... so many people think that it's "special" access/ accommodations and they resent it, think it's not fair, etc. they don't seem to get that accessibility should be for everyone, not just able-bodied...

How many of you rarely meet/know deaf people in your whole life?

In my teens, hung out with two Deaf guys who I met through other friends (they all went to same high school)... as an adult, I've had a Deaf co-worker, and met a few Deaf people at conferences...but overall, don't meet a lot of Deaf adults.
