I think they clearly typed Deaf with the capital D for a reason. No it is not just up to anyone in the world to decide for us who is the best representation of the Deaf community. That is to be left up to people who have experienced Deaf culture/community and who know ASL.

Deaf culture is an universal phenomenon. You obviously do not have the experience in/expertise of Deaf culture!

Hi all. I have been noticing that the CC on TWN (which I will be using to refer to The Weather Network in this thread) exists, but it is so non-functional that it for all intents and purposes does not have captioning. TWN's captioning erratically scrolls along the screen and is very slow...

I was trying to address the original poster to ensure that they did not at all misunderstand the intent of your first post in this thread - that, for example, you do not identify with the cultural theory of deafness. I just didn't want them to be misled since it seemed from the original post...

OP: This person does not represent every single person in the Deaf community. This is a person who does not identify as culturally deaf - please take this into account.

I give my sign name after I spell my first name normally.

There are numberous sources for my statement. Just to clarify, I meant that sign language was created by hearing people for the purpose of communicating amongst each other as a percusor to vocal language.

I think hearing people, IF they are culturally Deaf, should be allowed to give sign names. This segmentation does not seem very fair to me because, I think, sign language was originally invented as a way for HEARING people to communicate when their vocal cords didn't exist.

ASL is being used to a greater extent with hearing children as well, which is a good thing for humankind. For me, it's important that everyone who wants to learn ASL gets access to it as ASL offers a different perspective on communication. This is why I currently run a sign club at school.

I don't define "Deaf" past ASL because to do so would be exclusionary - extremely hypocritical. Deaf culture has a lot to give the world, such as a different way of communicating (visual) and a different way of expression (taking things as they are).

deaf = physically deaf Deaf = fluent in ASL, does not have to be deaf
