    Agression and Isolation

I need to know if anyone can point me to a product: We have an autistic boy that signs some. He responded to my signs but not my commands, though he can hear fine. I'd like some flash cards with basic signs. His level is about 4 years old. I'd like to work with hin using the cards with...

    Agression and Isolation

I have begun working with special kids - autistic, MR and Deaf. I noticed that they all display the same characteristics when they can't communicate. The isolation and lack of communicative abilities frustrates them.

    Is this right?

ASL rules wouldn't exactly contradict english. They're different languages. That would be like telling someone writing in Spanish, that they contradict english rules by placing an upside down exclamation mark at the beginning of a sentence. I wouldn't compare them that much. This is the...

    Your personal feeling??

very true. I learned early on, that EVERY language has its casual versions and its more formal versions. As a teacher, I prefer the more formal versions of most signs. There are many exceptions but RR isn't one. I still prefer RR instead of T

    Your personal feeling??

hehe...it's hard enough, I would rather not learn signs from outside my area :-) I absolutely LOVE working with the Deaf kids. They really are a joy. It's also sad though, how they are in such isolated worlds. Much of the hearing world treats them as if they simply don't exist.

    ASL class midterm assignment...

I was invited to one of these, though I didn't go, I hear their nice. The closest thing I've experienced are the clasrooms where there may be hearies, but we're told NO VOICE Anything you have to say..say it with your hands. As an ASL student and not an interpreter, I'm often told that...

    Agression and Isolation

Ok, I'd like to see people's input to this. We all know that it's a hearing world. We also know that this causes the Deaf people to have less of an interaction than a hearie. Deaf kids have less to choose from because they are more limited in their ability to communicate. I've learned...

    Your personal feeling??

Angel, you're right. (as if you needed me to tell you that) I use several sources. Not only do I substitute in the schools for Deaf teachers, I sub for the RSD aides as well. I study ASL from a book, I go to classes once a week, I practice with the Deaf people and I have a CD that I use also...

    A note about bigotry

well, I think there are those that are doing it for the money. That's the wrong reason. I got into signing by accident in a way. I think the hearing world leaves the Deafies out. In an educational community, the same community I entered willingly, it's sad to see anyone left out. Our...

    Your personal feeling??

From experience, I think many of us are too critical. Learning another language, experience has told me that usually, most people are going to try and help you not make fun of you. Of course this excludes those that only want dirty words. People learning english, I don't make fun of. Speaking...

    Oh deary me

The one thing we all have to understand is that in different areas there are different methods. We can all learn from the different methods. I'm not advanced, but I do know languages very well. I know grammar, I know english very well, I speak fluent spanish and I sign at an intermediate level...

5 year old HOH boy - oral only or "mainstreaming"

hehe...yeah, or modifying your words somehow... AS IF... I work (not always) with Deaf children from ages 6 through 17. The one thing that amazes me is how far behind most are and there's absolutely NO EXCUSE. They are intelligent, but left out. The blame lies partially with their...

    How long? ASL question

I hate to tell you that you are SERIOUSLY missing out on a lot of things. You're an isolationist! First of all: Let's get one things straight! You can in FACT teach Deaf children if you are hearing. do not ever think that because you're DEAF that you know more than a hearie! Do not...

5 year old HOH boy - oral only or "mainstreaming"

I agree. Why is it that some of the HEARIES think that DEAF means DUMB? Lack of intelligence?

5 year old HOH boy - oral only or "mainstreaming"

I've worked in the high school locally with the Deaf kids, and was told by their teachers that their parents mostly don't sign and communicate with them. This brings me to you - I truly see a bond, not only as parent/child but as a more communicatove bond. This is something some don't have...

    Oh deary me

In our schools (Texas) we use ASL and SEE, not signed english but SIGNED EXACT ENGLISH. The kids are taught SEE, and using both SEE and ASL. SEE is the best method to teach grammar. Those entering the public schools are taught grammar using SEE, they are taught ASL for most communications and...

Lantana, I'm a very cautious person. In a way, it sounds as if you simply resent hearies from using "your" language. The biggest problems I have are the "hearies" that aren't patient and think they are accepted by the Deaf community. These are the arrogant ones that give themselves...

5 year old HOH boy - oral only or "mainstreaming"

My opinion: HE obviously has a LOVE for language, both oral and signed. I'd suggest that you work with him to PERFECT his languages. ASL, SEE and English. This child is obviously VERY intelligent. Don't stop. As he learns he can excel at most things, he WILL!
