Why adults choose CI's for their children

What you are going through is normal. Remember your expectations and even the day of surgery I felt scared. I can't see myself not using my CIs, it gives so much to me.

Why adults choose CI's for their children

I do have a child and this discussion was held with my husband(my child is hearing). The answer is yes, we would make a choice for cochlear implants if hearing aids were not successful.

getting a cochlear implant as an adult?

My audie does all three, she was very neutral when she was discussing it with me. I took my three kits home and really studying them. I was drawn to AB. It just clicked. Just remember everyone has different outcomes. It depends on how much auditory memory you have, auditory stimulation of...

getting a cochlear implant as an adult?

The doctors knew I had a hearing loss but in the 70's they thought it was nerve damage and refused to fit with a hearing aid. I went unaided for the first 10 years of my life. I do have sensorineural hearing loss and lost the majority of my hearing by age 18. I just got by with hearing aids...

getting a cochlear implant as an adult?

I wore hearing aids since I was 10, so for 27 years. I started my progress 6 years ago with the same questions you are asking. Most of the questions are normal ones and I sugesst a lot of research with the three companies that manufacture the implants: Med-El, Advanced Bionics, and Cochlear. I...

Why adults choose CI's for their children

You get it. Sorry that is why so many just stop posting, instead of being able to learn from each other, we get bullied. It is a shame. Well good luck with your daughter's surgery(I will check your blog regularly for updates). Children bounce back quicker than adults.

Why adults choose CI's for their children

You're comparing an oral educational environment to child abuse??? And just because they have been in an educational setting does not mean they are marked for failure. You can't just pick up all the deaf children with cochlear implants and move them to deaf school just because you feel it...

I disagree. You can't take a child out of a successful educational environment and place them in an environment that they have no knowledge of. Do we stop at CI or do we also remove children with HA too.

What about the children with CI that are successful in mainstream education. Do we remove them from oral to introduce ASL? Should ASL be introduced as a support or what is your opinion. Or can oral education be encouraged if the child is being successful?

Now since it has been discussed the blame. What works? What strategies benefit deaf children? If the same can't be for all, then what overall strategies or educational practice works? What gives deaf children with CI (since this is the thread discussion) the best success in school?

We have the same situation, many parents do the homework for the children. It is easier than teaching the children at home. I try to send home the work that can be done independently. Not always the case. If the world was perfect then we would not be having these discussions. It is not.

I can't make a generalization, but I support parents in the education of their children. I do believe in including parents and educating parents with ideas to do at home. Education is 24 hours, not bus to bus.

So let me see if I get your point, you researched, you educated yourself, you made an informed decision about your child, and you want your child to be successful. Sounds like a parent who is the type of parent with one view, you want want is best for your child. That is me as well. :)

Survey of Bi-Bi programs - Empirical Article

Do you feel that even if a parent makes an educated choice. They researched and still chose the educational environment as oral, then they are wrong? If they chose differently then what you feel is the only way, are they wrong? Are parents wrong even if they know the options, discuss the...
