    JohnJoe CI Surgery Update

'Course, if you want her number, you'd do well to remember that an anesthesiologist is an MD, a doctor, and not a nurse. (Nothing against nurses, but MDs tend to be sensitive about that.)

CI surgery & switch on calender thread!

I just got my surgery date, yippee! Looks like I'll be flying home the day after final exams end and the surgery is about a week after that. So here's the updated list:

    I got an interpreter :)

One thing that might be useful is if the interpreter can do sign-supported oral interpreting (jasin - how well do you read lips?) and then transition towards PSE without oral, and finally to ASL. I did the first step - sign-supported oral - when I first started learning to sign, and it was...

    Dvd Recorder

I have one made by Zenith - don't know the model #, sorry, but it's a dual DVD/VHS player - that records the captions. (Cable plugs into the DVD player and the DVD player acts as a cable box, so it's not filtered through the TV first.)

    Getting the Harmony...

As you know, I don't have mine yet, but I'm getting a Harmony about a month after you are. As far as the batteries, AB is working on (not released yet, but supposedly soon) a "PowerPak" as an alternative for exactly the kind of situation you're talking about. It'll take AA batteries and clip...

Advice on hoh first year university!!!

Right, but here's what I'm thinking. If their FM system has receivers that you can plug a regular headset into, then you can plug your FM system into that ... and it will transmit to the earplug you already have (or whatever that gizmo is called). Can the EduLink take input from an auxiliary...

    FairTax

The problem with the FairTax system is that it increases the tax burden of those people who spend the bulk of their income and have little or no discretionary income to save - in other words, those people who can afford it least. Fair in a sense, but it's not a tax system I want to see implemented.

    Becoming Fluent

Disclaimer: I am not a language teacher, but I've done a lot of language study, and a close relative is a language teacher. Fluency varies. You will, in all likelihood, never sign like a native (I say "in all likelihood" just to cover my ass - very, very, very rarely, an adult can learn to...

Advice on hoh first year university!!!

Gotcha. Just spitballing here, maybe you've allready thought of this, but would putting the headset on just one side work? As in, the left earpiece is over your left ear and the right one you put over the bone just above or behind your ear? I don't know enough about your hearing to know if...

Advice on hoh first year university!!!

As far as FM, this may not be a problem. Most FM systems, you can buy a receiver that you can plug a regular headset into (my university has that in a few classrooms, and I plug my HA into the receiver like I would my iPod). Ask about that.

HOH people who recieved an CI, pls look here!

I'm getting an implant in June, and I use the phone to talk to my family back home. For me, other than the lack of lip reading, it's the ideal situation: I can turn the volume up as much as I want (because the phone is plugged directly into my aid) and there's no background noise to worry...

HOH people who recieved an CI, pls look here!

Actually, no. Talking on the phone doesn't automatically disqualify you, and there are successful CI users who were able to talk on the phone (albeit with difficulty) before they were implanted.

    Interesting thought.

There would probably be interpreters for the blind, though.

Star Trek Fan Films - Subtitles

Out of curiosity, what format are you using? DivX with SRT subs seems to be relatively popular, and works well with VLC, but there are a bunch of different choices. Yup. And if you look at captions (you're from the UK, right? Americans tend to distinguish between captions on the TV, and...

Star Trek Fan Films - Subtitles

    a) are there any Star Trek fans around here that may be interested ? Ooh! Ooh! Me! b ) are there any Fan Films that already have subtitles and what did you think of them ? I haven't watched many Star Trek fan films, but I've seen a few Star Wars fan films with subs. It was fun -...

    Do you believe in god?

I don't know which Pacman is, but it's perfectly possible to say "I don't believe in God" and be agnostic. There's a difference between not believing in the sense that you don't know; and actively believing that God does not exist. (For the record, I'm an atheist, but that's a term that people...

    Feelings on Cochlear implants

Lily'sDad: that's exactly what I mean. Let's take our hypothetical super-borg, who has 'perfect' hearing with a CI. The risks that the soldier will have battery issues or that their CI will need repair or fall off or whatever are too high. Without the CI, they're still deaf; and the CI is not...

    Can someone deaf receive SS/SSI

Don't be stupid - you, and many others, know how to work around your deafness to survive in a hearing world. A hearing person who becomes deaf doesn't! They don't have the experience and knowledge that will let them engage in these activities, whether that means lip reading, ASL, visual...
