    Phonetic approach?

Actually, written Chinese often is taught phonetically to native Chinese speakers now. There have been various transliteration systems used to render spoken Chinese in Latin characters (the ones we use for English). The current standard is pinyin, which is simply the 26 character latin...

Should a hearing signer still sign when an interpreter is present?

I can think of a couple reasons that one might do that (of course, that's assume there *was* a reason - obviously we don't always behave rationally!). I'm a non-fluent signer, but often poor signing makes the difference between being able to follow speech and being totally lost. If that was...

Hi & Some Questions for CI Users

I'm doing this now. I'm supposed to spend some time each day with just the implant, since it's fairly new (5 weeks post-activation). I wasn't sure how well it'd work at first, but as I'm starting to adjust to the implant, I'm finding that I like the way it balances with the hearing aid. Some...

    Sign Language?

You don't need to see a psychologist before getting an implant - at least, I didn't. And the GP ... that depends. If you have a GP you see regularly, it's not a bad idea to discuss it with them, but most GPs know very little about CIs. The only part of the process that it's really necessary...

    Phonemic Spelling Guide

I agree with you that there's more to language and literacy than just cueing, although I do think that cueing can be a useful tool if "part of this complete breakfast". But that's not my point. There are a lot of posts on AllDeaf about CS in that context; the "this doesn't work for language...

I am so going to spend the next few hours trying to do this, just on the off chance that it might work.

    CI Moments

No loop system - my understanding is that t those are much more common in Commonwealth nations than the US, for whatever reason (you're an Aussie, right?) But I use an FM system, so I get a similar effect. And a few of the larger lecture halls have had the professor's microphone system...

    Phonemic Spelling Guide

Jillio, why not restrict your fighting the good fight to places where it's actually relevant? A post about cued speech is not always about oralism, childhood education, or literacy, loml's politics/pedagogical philosophy notwithstanding. As an adult who's playing with CS, this list is quite...

    CI Moments

I've been on for almost exactly two weeks now, and just had my second mapping (yeah, it's early - we're rushing things a bit because I'm going back to college soon. And my rehab therapist thinks I'm moving quickly, so yay.) I switched from the HiRes-S strategy to HiRes-P (sequential to...

You don't need to have a VP100 or VP200 first. You can apply directly for an Ojo. That's what I did.

    Bi-CROS Hearing Aids?

Without specifics, it's hard to tell. But a severe loss is usually aidable, so you'd probably get better results from a hearing aid (probably a power BTE) in your worse ear as well as your better one.

1001 things to do with Cochlear Processor

That is awesome, Hear Again. When I got my implant turned on, one of my first thoughts was: why aren't there any funny CI-related tshirts? Would it be okay if I used one of those slogans on a t-shirt on Cafe Press? I'll post a link if/when I get it up, of course.

    Discrimination Policy

No, it's not illegal. IThose policies are not connected with the law; that is, saying "we don't discriminate based on race or gender" has nothing to do with the Civil Rights Act or the Equal Rights Act. Similarly, *not* saying "we do not discriminate based on disability" is not the same as not...

what brand of CI do you have ?

Most people use the t-mic as their standard mic - because it's right in the ear, it sort of creates a focused 'beam' to gather sound from. (The physicist in me hates that analogy - it's all backwards - but it works.) And now I'm doing some looking, I'm not sure the t-mmic has a tcoil after...

what brand of CI do you have ?

R2D2: The T-mic is (I think) a bit of a misnomer. II don't know how the Freedom works, but the Harmony (and Auria before it) 'adds functions' by changing ear hooks. So I have one ear hook that works with a DAI-type cable, one that works with FM, etc. The T-mic is another ear hook that places...

harmony or freedom or power aids or none?

A hearing aid is not directly comparable with an implant; they're targeted towards different populations. Even comparing, say, the Harony and Freedom implants is tricky because users have different preferences and priorities, and the implant manufacturers have different ways of doing things.

I believe oral education was fairly common in Germany around the time that Clerc came to the US.
