How many people here are can sign in 2 different languages?

I think Vampy was asking whether there is a mode of English like SEE, but based on BSL (as SEE is based to some extent on ASL).

    Question about Recovery

Check with your doc, but you will probably be fine by then. You won't have your processor yet, but you don't want to wear it on an amusement park ride anyway - static issues aside, the CI doesn't hold on *that* strongly. Have fun! Edit: Neecy is right - something like a ferris wheel isn't an...

    Jack's Eyes Video

My bad. Guess I was a bit quick to draw there. That's a big incision - I couldn't believe it! *touches his own, is glad it's smaller*

    Jack's Eyes Video

I got as far as seeing the "CI incision", which was pretty obviously faked, and didn't bother watching further.

    Hearing aids for profound losses

"Percent deaf" is, as far as I can tell, a misnomer; often, people just use their SRTs. More accurate would be to divide your SRT by 120 and convert that to a percentage, but even that is sort of a useless number, I think. My guess is that it's popular because most people don't know what it...

    CI question

I've never had an issue with static, and I work around (and in) electronics all day. Might be an issue if you were to go down a slide with the implant on, but all it could do is wipe the program - meaning you'd have to go back to the audiologist and redownload the program. Which is why parents...

    CI question

I have a compromised ear drum, though not on the side with my implant (they fixed the ear drum while they were doing my implant surgery, to prevent infection). My gut feeling is that it would be very difficult, even with a perforated membrane, to get water into your inner ear. You'd have to...

Long-time CI user, looking for advice going forward - N22 Freedom?

So, the internal parts vary from company to company, but their external parts are backwards compatible. Thus, I have the Advanced Bionics HiRes 90k inside my head, and I wear the Harmony processor. My friend who has an older AB implant could also wear the Harmony, or could also wear an older...

    shootin in the dark ?????

I've always paid for my own HA batteries, but my CI batteries are rechargable (do the AB implants even have a non-rechargable option, other than the PowerPak?), and my insurance covered that. In contrast, it's a constant battle with my insurance company to get my wheelchair expenses covered...

Washington Post article about a young man with a ci

I know Mark, albeit not that well, and I can confirm that he signs but generally prefers spoken English.

    What does TC stand for????

Having used both, I'm surprised you feel Typewell is better. Could you elaborate on why that is? My guess is that you feel that Typewell has fewer errors, though I wonder if you realize the extent to which it paraphrases and summarizes, leaving clients out of the loop and missing details.

    Political Correctness on Deafness

Cochlear War contains bad information, including ableist, bigoted, and factually incorrect descriptions of physical disabilities.

Is avr an acronym, or just an oddly transliterated Hebraic name?

    VP on PC...wait a mintue...Linux?

I've never done it myself (I don't have a decent webcam), but in theory, any H.323 client should do it - Ekiga, for instance.

    Hearing aids for profound losses

Just before I got my implant, I was profound in both ears (100-110 dB), and used hearing aids. It's not that there's no residual hearing left, just that you're beyond one more threshold.

    youtube ci comedy

I've seen "Equilibrium", but I've never experienced anything quite like it. There is a 'blink' of a transition as I go from no sound to sound, and it's different than turning on a hearing aid, but ... definitely nothing like in Equilibrium.

    Inked Interpreters

It's actually fairly common for people with a history of cutting or self-injury to tattoo over their scars, either to conceal them, or as a reminder of what they went through (or a celebration that they've stopped). From what I've read, it's not as easy as tattooing unscarred tissue, but there...

Patent Application for ALD Integrated into BTE CI Processor

That patent will never hold up in court - it fails the obviousness test. Basic IP law. That said, it'll be nice when ALDs *are* integrated into CIs ... I love my iConnect, but it eats batteries like they're candy.

    Inked Interpreters

The general consensus seems to be: if you can cover it up, fine. If not, it probably isn't a good idea; some consumers will be okay with it, but not all.
