    Why/how is deafness a fad?!

I also forgot to add, when I was a kid I had a hearing friend, who thought I was the coolest thing since sliced bread because of my deafness. She made herself an auditory trainer out of a juice box, yarn and cotton balls so she could be just like me, lol. I was really flattered at the time, and...

    Why/how is deafness a fad?!

I've noticed quite a few posts referring to how a lot of hearing people (mainly young females from what I understand) have interest in the deaf and come here and post because of a trend, a fad, etc. What I want to know is, WHY is it a fad? How does that work? What is the psychology behind...

Question for those who have been married many, many years

Words right out of my mouth. I was married for a very long time, and for me there were a couple of people I was very, very attracted to. I feel that if I had not married my husband I could have just as easily ended up with them instead... or not. Because sometimes they are just attractive...

    Hearing people's view of CI

It is nice to finally see a hearing person that "gets it" about the CI's. I have had many of these same experiences and it is really frustrating (only I am deaf with CI's.) Good job. :) And for the record if I see someone refer to my CI's as a "miracle" one more time, they better hope they have...

Hello Everybody, I really need your help with my dissertation :)

Once while driving on the highway I saw flashing lights behind me and pulled over. Wasn't speeding or anything so wasn't sure what was going on, but I rolled down my window and started digging in glovebox for registration anyway. I turned to look at cop only to end up staring in the barrel of...

How Do You Sign This Word?

For those that sign, how do YOU sign "computer"? It seems there are many different ways to sign this word.

    Question about ASL

I would love to be able to use ASL, but I am not very good at it. I tend to rely on PSE.

    First witness: ASL

When I was a kid, I think in first or second grade, back when they hadn't started mainstreaming yet and had "deaf ed" at the public schools. Some of my classmates in deaf ed used sign language with the teachers. Of course, I didn't really "get" what it was until later.

my daughter was diagnosed w/Hearing loss

You're the only person I've ever seen that doesn't think it is exhausting. Everyone else I've known that is forced to lip read as primary means of communication and doesn't have the benefit of hearing enough to supplement the lip reading finds it exhausting as hell. I have known a few hard of...

my daughter was diagnosed w/Hearing loss

Same here! Every single word of this is my story too. So frustrating.

my daughter was diagnosed w/Hearing loss

My mom had the same attitude as you.... and it ruined my life. Sure, I can speak so well that most people don't know I am deaf until I tell them. But what good is being able to speak when I can't, you know... HEAR? Reading lips only goes so far. Now I have no friends in person because...

    lose a body function

I picked hair, because to me that's just a vanity issue. I'd much rather lose every single hair on my body than lose any of the other stuff that was listed. I could always wear wigs and fake eyebrows if I didn't look good bald - and I would not mind losing body hair elsewhere anyway, lol

    I was very lucky today...

This is true. Pit Bulls do have very strong jaw muscles along with bone structure that helps with that, so it's very easy for them to maintain their hold on whatever they've got. But there is no such thing as "lock jaw" for dogs. They can let go if they really want to.

    Deaf FRIENDLY computer games?

I don't play it anymore, but when I did, World of Warcraft was very deaf friendly. I didn't even bother to put my implants on to play it most of the time. Everything important was either written out or had a visual cue.

How about vegan and gluten free?

Is anyone on this board vegan AND gluten free at the same time? Just hoping for some support. Vegan isn't hard for me. Neither is gluten free, really. But both types of eating at the same time are SUPER hard. It's almost kind of like they contradict each other... either way, it doesn't leave...

    I was very lucky today...

I was also going to say "don't run", but I see several others have beat me to it. :) They are right, it does trigger a prey drive in larger dogs especially when there is more than one, and running away can make a friendly exchange turn into an aggressive and violent one. Seriously, it is...

List of Streaming Services with CC/Subtitles [Netflix, AppleTV, Vudu, Amazon, etc]

Are you sure the Netflix app for Android supports captioning? It wasn't that long ago I tried to watch a show on my Evo and it wasn't captioned, even though it was on the PS3. The only "captions" I was able to get on that app was for foreign movies.
