    Asl

Our son is apparently not interested, too. But recently we realized what's the "problem" (with speech too): he wants to TALK, not only to repeat single words/signs. He's able to, but that's not what WE do, we make sentences... In LS too (even if we're not good at it by now). Especially me... I...

Do we have a challenge ahead of us to avoid becoming Hearing?

A mum I know did this using a lollipop instead... After exercising a bit, she gave the lollipop to the kid :D But some kids are still tortured to learn to talk.

    Grammar

Well, I hope no one gets offended by that, but I think it is somewhat true that deaf people (regardless of their education, since the oral-only adults I met are not necessarily better than the SL users) have a hard time with grammar. mmh... No, that's not the point. Many hearing people does not...

Do we have a challenge ahead of us to avoid becoming Hearing?

Just wanted to say that oralism is absolutely NOT dead. I hope it is disappearing there in the USA, because it would mean it's going to be "out of fashion" here too in the next years... (you know Italy does what America does, good or bad). But here in Italy, hospitals that dx deaf kids...

    Deaf pre school

Ok, now it's more clear... :ty: Your story is so very particular, I think you're really doing a good work! It must be hard, all that trip every day... But I'm all with you about residential programs :D As for classes at deaf schools, well I meant there are 3-4 kids PLUS 15-20 HEARING...

    Deaf pre school

I'm not sure I read that right ... Plus you know that English is not my first language, but... Did you all transfer there, or are you driving your child 3.5 hours go and back everyday??? I have a school for the deaf (well, sort of -in fact there are 3 or 4 deaf kids in every class)...

    Software to "see" voice ..???

Hi there, my little one has just went to his audi's appointment and all went well. With his aids he seems to hear at 40-50db, including speech frequencies, so not bad considering he's profound in both ears. He's not very interested in sound though, which I understand since he is very very...

    Preparing 8and worrying) for kindergarten...

Well, I have no realtives out of this town, and I don't know if I would be likely to send my son away from home. It would be a good solution in theory, but he is so small and I don't want him to think we are sending him away because he's "different" from us... While his hearing sister have all...

    Preparing 8and worrying) for kindergarten...

Well, what makes us think about relational problems is the fact that he doesn't use much sign/gesture too. He tends to run away from relation - of any kind. I think he gets very emotional and thus close up communication. Me and my father were the same when we were kids (and we still have to work...

    Preparing 8and worrying) for kindergarten...

Yes I'm living in Italy... I've read the story of Jordan, but our situation is quite different. I've been to the audi yesterday and he (like us) thinks that the problem now is about my son's relational difficulty more that about hearing itself... He seems to hear 40-50db on speech frequencies...

Daughter just diagnosed with severe-profound hearing loss - please help!

That's EXACTLY how we realized our son is deaf!!! He still does that, but he does use his voice a lot to giggle, scream and so on. If he wants to, he's able to imitate a vocalization from another person (singing, for example) and is often in the right tune, too, but no way to put voice...

Aelita Andre -- I wanna have that much fun when I paint!

All children are genius!! I know a mum who did the same here in Italy, too. Plus, her child is deaf :D She also wrote a book on her experience with her kid's deafness, she helped me a lot in my journey... She pointed me to the HAs manufacturer where we are going now. Her kid's works were...

Daughter just diagnosed with severe-profound hearing loss - please help!

I would suggest signing, too. Plus, 70-80 db as far as I know is NOT a profound loss, is it? If she has all frequencies she should have a good gain with HA. I know deaf people with a loss of 80-110, but with all frequencies, who can use the phone with their aids... So... Yes, your audi doesn't...

Do we have a challenge ahead of us to avoid becoming Hearing?

I'm just working on my comprehension of all these questions but I think that even if you wanted to, you just can't become hearing. If you are Deaf, or born deaf, you think in a different way. It's so clear in kids (yes, even CI stars) when you interact with them... Thoughts follow different...

    A Deaf's View Regarding CI

Just to say, I'm an hearing parent and I often say to my son he's lucky... For not hearing his sister, who is talking 24/7, even in her sleep  I think being lucky or unlucky is something a person can say for himself. I do think I'm lucky to have two kids that are soooo different one...

    Kids trading things????

Depends on age I guess. But I'd say, let's talk about it before... If we all agree (parents included) then it's ok. If not, no way.

New Language to use with Parents

I find Non Violent Communication is a great tool to talk to... Whoever. I'd LOVE professionals of any kind to use it when it comes to situations like this... Doesn't mean that you can't be sincere, but it helps keeping in mind the feelings and emotions of the person you are talking to. And your...

    A Deaf's View Regarding CI

Grendel, I have no intention to say one way o another can be wrong, or that you can't do both (SL and CI). I'm just saying that, like many other decisions we parents have to make, you can't say "what would it be if... ?". You gave her all the tools and that's wonderful, but in the end, it will...

New hearing device for babies hailed

First thing I thought was "well, interesting!" since I'd be so curious to know if my son does indeed hear something with his HAs! But then... Just hearing doesn't mean much. The hard work is processing sound, and to really know what he does understand... You must wait anyway. Or implant him...

    Ear gear?

I just bought a pair for my son, corded ones. I like them, now with the summer coming I need a little more protection from water etc. I had to take off that thing to clip them to t-shirt (oh gosh my English grows worser and worser) because he doesn't like it, we always used an elastic cord to...
