100 years ago people didn't have mobile phone and they did fine. You not having FM available doesn't mean it's of no use for children nowadays.. You should stop writing about AVT as if you know about it. What are your experiences? Are you a parent that took a child there and experiences AVT...

    CI Surgery approved today

Regarding sounds that hurt: there is no need for that. There should be a maximum stimulation that can be set. Loud noises should just be cut off before you would experience pain. Ask your Audi. He/she should be able to lower the dynamic (top) range..

So good to read you are enjoying your CI. Must be overwhelming to hear so many sounds, but wonderful to hear your brain is recognizing Los sounds again. Regarding noise while flying.. Just go to a lower program, or set the processor to a setting where it focuses on nearby sounds. (Or the "T"...

Wonderful first-hand experience from deaf student at Oxford University

Excellent video, showing how this girls is at ease in both worlds. In was surprised by the quality of what she hears. But like others say, her CI is 20 years old. Think of a computer 20 years ago. (Hard disk) (processor) You could not even run today's software on it. The program might not even...

    infant with CI speech therapy

Yes, the parents of the twins were hearing, but the mother has Deaf parents. She grew up in a Deaf world and in the documentary she explains how she needed speech therapy because she spoke like a deaf person. So sometimes children that can hear and grow up with deaf people need speed therapy.

    infant with CI speech therapy

No. The brain will do that without therapy.. Just like any other child. They would have little to no delay in speech, as you can read in the articles. So, speech therapy might not be needed, at least not because they started hearing late. Perhaps because of other reasons, like hearing...

    infant with CI speech therapy

One or two? You're not sure? Are the parents d/Deaf or hearing? I recall the mother of the twins in Sound & Fury" (hearing) needed speech therapy because she spoke like her d/Deaf parents... But according to studies, children implanted that early will follow normal development. Speech...

Finally, a great comparison of what hearing thru a CI is like..

A nice comparison.. Already a bit better than the "This is how CI sounds" on the internet, where they play sound/sentences with 24 channels.. (See here..) Listening to my daughter, how she can repeat the little nuances of sounds in Dutch, English, Norwegian... there is no way her hearing can...

    Student Research: Cochlear Implant Controversy

Here in Norway, there is no controversy, so it depends country by country. In the USA, (and the major members here are from USA) there IS. .. and I think it is tearing the Deaf community apart... Have you seen "Sound & Fury"..

    Cochlear Implant advise

Welcome to AllDeaf... Deaf community wants to see every deaf child being able to communicate.... and that's the most important for me (as the father of a child born deaf) as well. What the Deaf community thinks is that a child born deaf NEEDS sign language. That's where I disagree. What the...

    where to start? deaf baby

ASL is a wonderful way to start communication with your child, and that time is never wasted if you would decide to stop with it at a later stage. We used sign language with our child and found it very useful in the transition zone from deafness to hearing when she got her CI. We have decided...

    Advice for a hearing parent?

I understand what you're saying.. I can see how a spelled word is a continuous flow to be recognized... When introducing ourself at the sign language course we used to fingerspell our names. Just never used fingerpelling with Lote. Part because we were not fluent, partly because we used 1 sign...

    Advice for a hearing parent?

With adults.. I agree... This child is 18 months.... You need to know the alphabet before you can use fingerspelling... Fingerspelling the name of the Lottes sibling would have been pointless.
