The new deaf generation....speaking and listening

I think Jillio is talking about neural wiring. That would take something like a neuro textbook if you mean it literally. But your language helps wire how you process emotion, space, music, body language, etc.

School for the Deaf denies deaf child with Down Syndrome placement

I agree. The idea in this thread that 'hearing placements' are better than deaf ones is a myth. *sigh*

Colorism: An ignored aspect of racism.

The Lighter the Skin, the Shorter the Prison Term? I agree with the premise of this article with one caveat: Attractive people get less harsher sentences as well. And skin color is a matter of one's perception of beauty. Thoughts?

Casey Anthony found not guilty of her murder charge

Bad idea. Then the father would be obligated to pay child support even if he is not the father! My son's birth certificate doesn't have his father's name on it. I know exactly who it is and he pays child support. I'm keeping his name off, though, since we decided that he's Dad in DNA Only. ;)...

Stop yelling at me...i cant hear you anyways!

Heh. Some people think that speaking louder means they are enunciating better. That's not exactly true, but whispering generally means your mouth doesn't move as much. And most of us hearing will talk to hearing people in a manner that isn't so 'speech-readable' because of the way our tongues...

    Grammar

Currently there are Deaf who resent CIs, so I'm sure it will go both ways! D'oh! Actually, Jillio, because of your profession and experience, you can probably back me up when I say that MOST people who speak Standard English look down on ANYONE who does not!

    Grammar

Short answer: Because Deaf generally don't spend their days talking to Oral speakers of English. And if they do, they may be talking to people who don't have 'good' grammar. Most Deaf learn how to read and write English but don't advance. Most of the time, it's a matter of early language...

    Military same sex Ban

This is an issue that I think needs to be settled within the military and not outside of it. but...most have already gone through sensitivity training (at least the USAF has) and whatever, so it's a matter of time. Still, not sure a court ordering the military to do something is going to help...

Deaf / HOH please: In what language(s) are you fluent?

That's a matter of Academic v. Standard English. Your English is Standard. edit: British Standard, maybe? Where are you from? But trust me, there are millions of people who grow up in the U.S. with perfect hearing that can't type a term paper, either. I know this, cause I wrote many term...

The new deaf generation....speaking and listening

Beach Girl, you brought up kind of what I was thinking. I considered taking the FS exam once and looked into those requirements. What they are looking for is someone who can communicate in that country's 'standard' dialect, eg, high German, not low German, or proper Israeli Hebrew, not...

The new deaf generation....speaking and listening

Here's the thing: Spoken word and written word are not the same. It isn't a matter of audio. People speak English using different styles than how they write it. It is also an issue of speed and how our brain organizes things. My written Spanish is 5x better than my oral. An 'accent' is only...
