    What's a difference between deaf and hard-of-hearing?

This x1000. I identify myself as deaf. I have identified as such since my loss was at the severe level, and it has been dipping into the profound level (my audiogram looks totally bizarre btw). I have trouble understanding speech in general, but if I'm not lip reading, I might catch one word...

    Bilateral (Pros and cons)

Wirelessly posted She never said it was bad, only that it depended only each person's needs and wants. I think she meant that the outcome is different for each person, so they should take into consideration how much benefit they might get (or lack thereof). We don't know if this person has...

    Hearing Aids vs. Cochlear Implants

Wirelessly posted FJ is totally right. The advice she has given you is great--work on your ASL, get him exposed, etc. However, you don't know why your son isn't talking yet. Don't fret too much until he has visited another professional about it. Make sure that professional is experienced...

Do you believe women are harsher about looks than men, or vice versa?

I think you and Sally have a good point. I agree with the quote, now that you brought it to my attention. I suppose in regards to each sex specifically, women are harsher about other women than men are about their peers. But in general, it's about insecure people.

    Hearing Aids vs. Cochlear Implants

Forgive me for kind of hijacking here, but have the requirements for CI changed? I always thought you had to have at least a severe loss to get a CI. Was I maybe just misinformed or something? Totally understand though. Everyone's audiogram is different, even if they have the same loss level...

    Hearing Aids vs. Cochlear Implants

Wirelessly posted He might just be a late talker. My nephew is a little older than that and he's hearing, but he doesn't talk well. He says maybe four words clearly. I know of plenty of hearing boys who talked late too. My loss as a child used to be moderate-severe, and I was able to hear...

A teacher of the deaf talks about using Cued Speech

Wirelessly posted I wasn't trying to refute her, just simply adding in my two cents! :) It's very true that in my friend's case, it would not be considered a success if he decided to drop it, but at least he can communicate with his family.

A teacher of the deaf talks about using Cued Speech

I don't have any citations, but I have two anecdotes (sorry jillio!). I know of one person who is totally deaf with no CI or anything who grew up cueing. He did well with it until he went to Gally, then dropped CS for ASL. He now just uses it around his family that--to my knowledge--does not...

Do you believe women are harsher about looks than men, or vice versa?

I was just curious as to what others believe on this. I've heard some people say that women bash other women in terms of looks than men do, but I've also heard opinions that men seem to put down women more easily. It doesn't have to refer to the opposite sex, it can refer to the same sex. In...

Staff Tackles and Chokes Deaf Shopper suspected of Shoplifting

The Forever 21 where I live now (it's very recent, probably in the past few months) carries: regular women's sizes, plus sizes for women, men's clothing, and children's clothing. Since this was in a big city, they probably had the same options available, and that's why he was there. He...

    Flicking the light switch?

I like it, especially if I'm busy doing something in my room. If I had an office, I'd like it there too. It freaks me out when someone comes up behind me and just taps my shoulder! Gets my attention without scaring me so much! Only problem is that my nephew is too short to reach the lights...

What are you thinking about? Part II

I'm practicing my ASL with my mom, and my nephew is here with me. I'm a little concerned he's going to spill his melted ice cream all over my bed...

Which best graduate and law schools for the deaf?

Wirelessly posted I don't go to Gally. I go to a state university. I chose it over Harvard because of the amount of scholarship money I received from them. I decided to save money for law school by doing that, rather than blowing money all on my undergrad. No one cares where you got your BA...

What are you thinking about? Part II

Of course it does! Especially since nobody in my house is awake right now and I had to share my revelation with someone! You just happen to be one of the fortunate people I shared it with. :giggle:

What are you thinking about? Part II

I think I've found possibly the hottest HOH guy I've ever seen in my life. He's not deaf, but whatever. Hahahah. I'm posting this here because I have to get it out somewhere! :p

Making small talk with hearing strangers

Does anyone happen to know what exactly they learn in those training classes? What are they told to do to "best serve us?" Are they told about the diversity of deaf people, and that some talk, some choose not to, some sign, etc.? What are they made aware of, because it seems to me that they keep...

Florida Teacher's Essay Becomes Rallying Cry for Respect

I went to school in Florida for a few years, and I have to agree how terrible it is that sometimes our teachers would scrap our curriculum and prepare us for the FCAT. I feel so bad for teachers, and I always wanted to be a teacher, but their treatment is what draws me away.
