    Bilateral Activation

Yeah, but then I suppose because he's been totally deaf in that ear for more than 20 years, he doesn't really feel motivated to wear the CI if it's just a bunch of beeps to him. I told him it'd get better if he wore it consistently, but no one knows how much he'd actually benefit until he tried...

    Bilateral Activation

Yeah, my friend was implanted as a child (at 2), and he got a 2nd implant when he was...20 or 21. He NEVER wears his second one because it sounds mechanical to him, with a bunch of beeps and such. He's totally deaf, so he's never heard ANYTHING in that ear. I wonder what he'd hear if he stuck...

    Choosing Not To Speak

I speak when the circumstances call for it. I'm oral deaf, so I generally speak a LOT of the time. I only go voice off if I'm ordering food over a counter, if I know I will NOT be able to understand the other person by lipreading, etc. Basically with strangers that are guaranteed to ask me...

    "Hearing Impaired" = offensive?

What do you mean ask you to do anything? Like they thought you couldn't accomplish a task?

Who posted about getting a binder of info about DHH options?

No, I wasn't thinking of that. I was just referring to the binder with the information and contacts, etc. It doesn't say ASL is better or anything of that nature, just gives contacts for a ton of resources, from what I can tell. It does give directions on how to use relay and stuff like that though.

Who posted about getting a binder of info about DHH options?

Yes, I love how they had people tour you around and offered you classes and such. I wanted something similar for other future deafies in my area, because hearing all of the stories of the kids I know and those who are now adults, it's horrible to see how few parents really knew what to do...

Who posted about getting a binder of info about DHH options?

Thank you so much! I knew it was probably you. I was like "Hm, I think the person with the binder ended up placing their child in a bi-bi school, it's probably Grendel!" I'll definitely check all that out! Is there something in there that might lead me to info about the binder (or the...

Do you think sexuality is on a sliding scale?

That's what we're saying. To me, bi is a person who would have sex AND a relationship with men or women. EDIT: I wrote my own definition of bi, because others disagree with me and say bi is simply sexual attraction to both sexes, without the relationship part. I disagree and think who you have...

    "Hearing Impaired" = offensive?

I think that's because HOH is not quite DEAF, and it's not quite HEARING. Many HOH function more like hearing people, and many of them function like deaf. Some sign, some speak, etc. HOH I think is probably even more varied than deaf, culturally, because they really are in between worlds. I...

    I am at RIT now

Let me know how you like it! I want to visit there soon and maybe transfer if I like it enough. :)

    ASL Flash Cards?

I think it's a great idea! Put up signs that coordinate with objects, like the sign for 'phone' by the phone, and 'table' on the table, etc. That might help connect the sign to the object in your head. I know of one person who learned Spanish like that, and she told me she'd play games with it...

I have some questions about Gallaudet/any Deaf school

Really cool that you want to go to Gally--that's the best way to become fluent! Surround yourself with Deaf people, 24/7, haha. I wish I could do that. You'll be able to see how native speakers use ASL, and hopefully make yourself a better interpreter. You don't have to be fluent to be...

    Deaf & Autistic

This is just my suggestion. I'm not a medical professional, this is just what I might do as a sort of home "test." -I'd check out general symptoms of autism, and basically rule out anything that might involve sounds, voicing, etc. If he doesn't make eye contact when you talk to him or...

Who posted about getting a binder of info about DHH options?

I used the search button for "binder of information" because I couldn't remember exactly what the post said, but I know someone posted about getting a binder when a deaf/HOH child is born or something like that. It supposedly contains information about ASL, mainstreaming, deaf schools, and any...

who else has had thier HAs run over by a car????

I've never had anything crazy happen with my hearing aids that I've done myself. Although once my nephew took them and decided they might be better if they were dipped in orange juice...:)

    Marlee Matlin, "I'll Scream Later"

I don't remember reading about her being molested by her father, just the other two. If it wasn't true though, wouldn't her mom or dad have said something about it?

Do you believe women are harsher about looks than men, or vice versa?

Hahahahahaha. Was that in Best of Craigslist?!

I finally did it... Now, I have questions LOL

Aww, I'm so happy for you! So many of us grew up the oral route, and huge chunk of that population wishes they had ASL when they were younger. At least we know your child will be able to communicate with possibly both, if you're looking at a bi-bi school for later on! I'm also very jealous...

Do you believe women are harsher about looks than men, or vice versa?

Hahaha, that's awesome. I don't know of any lesbians who would just go up to a stranger girl and start hitting on them unless it was in a place where there were GLBT people or something and it was obvious.
