Turned HOH at 4...yet still discriminated...ah bliss!

Interesting. Its a small community here and many of the deaf people speak and sign. Even at deaf socials there is frequently more speaking than signing, and I know adult deaf couples that speak to each other on occasion rather than sign. I feel ackward signing because ive been told because its...

    more interpreter issues...UGH!

Yeah, but unfortunatley not all terps have been through college ASL courses. Around here as long as you have two years of college or can pass the TABE (test of adult education), and have rudimentary sign skills, you can get a job with the school district.

    Fingerspelling Practice?

Ive been signing for a couple years now and I fingerspell a lot when I sign. I still get confused. My friends get what im saying but if im talking to someone who isnt used to my signing I have to slow it down. I practice all the time still. In the shower I will fingerspell all the words on the...

Estranged son of anti-gay Westboro pastor says father does 'evil'

2/22/11: Shirley Phelps-Roper admitted in an interview Monday that her father, the head of the Westboro Baptist Church, physically abused her and her siblings as a way to indoctrinate them to church dogma. The group was in my town about 7 years ago. They were protesting our college production...

substituting or is this what he hears?

How long has he been talking? If his speech is new I wouldnt worry too much yet. Children babble and copy before they form words correctly on their own. If this has been going on for a significant time im curious why neither the SP or the Audi have any ideas. Im sure others will have more input...

    Caption Bleep

Ive seen it both ways. Many pre-recorded shows have delays, spelling or gramatical errors, or signifigant differences from the spoken words. I dont know the cause for it.

    Caption Bleep

I get so flutered when there is a signifigant lag. I have to either turn of the captions or mute the volume. Having both on gets me severely confused! It is frustruating when something big happens like someone says "Youre pregnant" to a teenage girl and her mom starts crying and then it switches...

    Caption Bleep

It depends on the tv program. Some bleep out the whole word and some sort of "distort" the word. I have seen once or twice that the caption will read **** or "bleep" when then word is actually said out loud. This is more rare, but does happen. In many shows captions will paraphrase as well. My...

The Celebrity Apprentice 2011!! Marlene Matlin!!!

I was more than irritated. The book was supposed to be about one of the team memebers and Marlee has a great story. And kids are NEVER too young to learn about diversity. Gee Dionne, maybe we shouldnt expose them to black kids either. Might be too much for them to handle! I was equally...

    Child leashes

I worked with behaviorally challenged kids in the schools and we had many in harnesses and one that could still get out so we eventually had to have an aide on the bus with him.

    baby sign language question

I will probably have a mix of Deaf/HOH and hearing kids. Any input on the best way to expose them to multiple languages. Especially with the hearing/hoh kiddos. I sign when I talk but its english word order and I want my kids to pick up all the ASL grammar and whatnot. Do you just switch off...

    Bad educational interpreter...

Sadly this is a common occurence. The schools figure "better something than nothing" and you end up with under-qualified terps.

    Movies related to Deaf Culture?

I personally own 'Children of a Lesser God' and 'Sweet Nothing in My Ear' as well as 'Gerald' and 'Ledgend of the Mountain Man' which are both ASLFilms. There have been episodes of the various CSIs and Law and Order and House with Deaf charectars. Marlee Matlin did a couple years on The L Word...

"I think you're missing the point..."

I received a call from a friend last night asking if I would be comfortable interpreting for a medical appointment. Me: "No, im not certified. Im not really comfortable in any interpreting situation, definatley not a medical or legal appointment." Friend: "You've interpreted stuff before...

    Child leashes

Never heard of that before. Ive gotten id bracelets and temporary tatoos with id info on them for some of my autistic kiddos before but never heard of something like that. Can you elaborate a bit?

    Dating friend's ex-wife

I think it depends on the relationship between your friend and his ex-wife. If they are friendly and get along it might be okay. But I would be very, very cautious.
