Stereotypes of the deaf and hard of hearing

Well I like horns as long as I don't live in NYC where they blare like crazy, and I don't mind you having an opinion of course, but to say I should be a passenger is really sarcastic to say the least. Anyways, I said what I felt about it and surely have no intentions of starting anything. I...

In New York, worship becomes more accessible to the deaf.

Wow, Three of us on here guess we ought to maybe pm each other and introduce ourselves. I grew up learning PSE back in the early 80's in the deaf section at the assemblies before the society switched over to ASL. I used to interpret there. But learning ASL from a book impossible, and there were...

In New York, worship becomes more accessible to the deaf.

Just to quickly add, the article mentioned above is 6 years old. We have added many many more groups and congregations worldwide for the deaf. I currently joined a group in spring hill, florida. We are rapidly growing into a congregation now. Won't be long. Two of the three meetings we hold each...

In New York, worship becomes more accessible to the deaf.

Jesus commanded us to love our neighbors as ourselves. And he commanded in Matthew 28:20 to "Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations." In this Jehovah's Witnesses take delight in helping people of all faiths, races, languages and poor and rich alike worldwide. Jehovah God...

Is it ok to force deafies learn Oral while cant force hearing ppl learn ASL

I would also like to add that deaf culture can be preserved eventhough children learn orally if they learn asl also. Is it ok to force deafies learn Oral while cant force hearing ppl learn ASL

As a hearie who has been intensely interested in deaf people since I was ten years old, I for a very long time thought, leave the deaf alone and let them use sign language if they want, why should they be forced to learn orally? Now that I am learning ASL and have learned alot from this forum, I...

Stereotypes of the deaf and hard of hearing

I don't necessarily think the deaf should not be allowed to drive, but I can say from a hearing prespective, that hearing a horn has saved me from an accident before and vice versa. However, one thing I noticed is that deaf people are very attuned visually and more safe due to paying attention...

If your family is hearing do they sign?

I think that is true due to the fact men strengths are in math, while women's brains are strong in linguistics. Not to say this is a fact all the time of course but as a general rule. That is why you will find women are more neater in writing, and more talkative than men.

    Stupid question

I don't "write" in ASL. But since I can't do a sign video, I have no choice but to put it in writing and then the person reading it would sign what I wrote. I do wish it could be written because alot of books written in our english grammar and syntax some deaf don't understand. Like for people...

    Stupid question

I don't agree that is pidgeon at all. It is not in english word order by any means. However, since I am still learning, please inform me how you would write the above sentences. Thank you very much. Robbie :)

    Stupid question

ASL has nothing to do with english at all. It is it's own language and has it's own rules. Like for instance: I am going to the store because my shoe broke yesterday. In ASL it would be Yesterday, my shoe it broke, now I go-to store. See the difference? Now there is a sign that with your left...

    How long? ASL question

Others on here have stated at least 5-7 years. Some exceptionally language oriented people can learn it in 2-4 years. Fluency involving all the intricate nuances of the language surely takes a while when you consider we hearies think in words vs concepts. To switch to truly thinking in concepts...

    Question for expert ASL translator

Sorry I meant asl interpreter not translater.I know the basics of asl grammar and syntax but I want to learn the nuances; the advanced grammar. Can someone who is severely deaf talk normally?

Alcohol depresses the central nervous system and that part of the brain that inhibits one from doing things they wouldn't normally do is severly impacted when one is drunk. One who is normally reserved, becomes gregarious and outgoing almost like he or she is free to express themselves without...

sign language not a real language?

now that this thread has been reopened after a year... I would like to learn some idioms and expressions. Like I know train go sorry, and holier than thou, by a hair.... What are some more? So I can ask my deaf friends how to sign them. Or maybe you all can describe the sign to me if you want...
