    Not a candidate for CI?

Just saying, if his loss is profound, then that makes him profoundly DEAF. Total deafness is 105, yes, but you can be deaf and still have a little hearing. Just thought I'd throw that out there. My loss is severe-profound, but I choose to introduce myself as deaf, even though I can hear decently...

What is it like at Gallaudet University?

You can get scholarships to lessen your fees. Gallaudet would allow you to become fluent in ASL much more quickly than just a few classes. Gallaudet isn't as bad as some people make it out to be, but most of those people are just the few with bad experiences, and from what I've heard, it has...

    Studying Abroad

I heard about the Sienna program too! That sounds sooo cool! London sounds pretty neat as well.

    Finding Deaf Community!?

Another thing you can do is look up the closest Deaf Chat Coffee to you, or Deaf Night Out/Deaf Professional Happy Hour (DNO/DPHH). Those are all events that most states have.

    Walking With Hearing Aids

I'd leave my HAs on. I just walk around the sprinkler or whatever.

How much do you wear your hearing aids?

I was just wondering, because some people hate wearing hearing aids or don't feel like they need to wear them. It's interesting to see everyone's reason WHY they do/don't use HAs or CIs! I wear mine everyday for now because I'm around hearing people 24/7, and I feel like they help me lipread...

    Hamill the Movie Release?

I could have seen Black Sand, but I had a massive amount of tests when it was showing nearby! :( I wish Hamill would do a screening close to where I'm at, but looks like it's not happening!

    autism

Before my nephew could talk (he's hearing and just a little behind), he would do typical "autistic" things. For example, he would flap his hands when he got angry, line up his cars, be really particular about his toys, and eat only certain things. Now, months later, my nephew can communicate...

    Bitter Single

Aw, you'll find someone. I'm enjoying my time just doing my thing and accomplishing my goals for now. Take this as a time to do what you want to do and have fun. I know everyone says that, but when you get a boyfriend, you have to consider how THEY feel about your social activities, your goals...

    Discrimination against HH/Deaf oralists?

They are. In some states, ASL can be taken for class credit. Not all states, but some. In the US, I don't know of any schools that you can take Auslan, BSL, etc. at, but they do have ASL. We could encourage schools by showing the benefits of ASL and visual communication and showing how many...

hearing aids squeaks because of volume?

I'm with everyone else. It sounds like a bad fit--yes, I know you said that they're brand new. When I first got my current hearing aids, I kept getting feedback too. They molded to my ear just fine, the issue was that they would not STAY in. Basically they kept sliding out. What my audiologist...

    Discrimination against HH/Deaf oralists?

Definitely. I had no idea any of this existed before February 2010. So basically a year ago, I was in the dark. I would have been so much more comfortable in school, in my social life, and EVERYTHING had I just found the Deaf community sooner. If those schools had reached out to me, I would have...

substituting or is this what he hears?

Oh goodness! Honestly, I wouldn't worry too much because like many others on here, I know hearing children who have speech problems. He could just be adjusted to his hearing aids and can now discriminate more sounds. Also, the fact that he's LEARNING to speak means he's not going to get it all...

Some babies born deaf aren't deaf after all! Don't rush CI!

Lifesadream: Growing up, I had a moderate loss as well, and then progressed to severe-profound deafness when I was around 18. I remember what it was like having moderate loss, and I remember being able to hear speech better than I can now. It wasn't perfectly clear, but I could hear it. It was...
