    Hot Yoga and Med-El Rondo

I can't imagine wearing a HI or CI/BAHA during Hot Yoga (I do Bikram Yoga). Not only is it hot and you're pouring sweat but the +40 - 45C temp can't be good for it.

    Severe to profound moulds

I get the full moulds, with the smallest vent size - in silicone (not acrylic), I also have a bit longer mould (goes a bit deeper into the canal) than is typical. I get the vent (versus not having a vent) because I find that it doesn't change the sound at all, but it equalizes the pressure so...

    working memory, deafness and sign

I haven't read the entire article, however those with APD often do process and store information in a manner that is similar to native signers. It's interesting that you think that the chronic ear infections are linked to APD? APD (and CAPD) is a neurological condition (it's a "how the brain...

I am responsible for my son's hearing loss.

OK - As someone who wants to prepare for "the worst" here's my advice. Literacy and social skills will open an abundance of doors for your child - it will allow them to go to the schools they want, work towards the careers they want and give them "equal access" to information. Instead of...

    CI surgery and Sleep Apnea

You'll be intubated for the procedure, but I'd have it written that post-surgery you're extubated directly to CPAP (they can "bleed" O2 into the CPAP if needed) and remain on it until you're completely awake. Keep in mind that you'll need CPAP headgear that will accommodate the surgical site...

Will child mild mixed HL get worse?

To help put you are ease, keep in mind that for adults 20db is considered "normal hearing" range. Where are you located in Canada ? Instead of trying to find ways to hide your child's hearing loss, I'd urge you to instead focus on doing whatever you need to do to find peace with it. It's...

    Pulsating tinnitus!

If you're hearing/feeling a pulsing, especially since you also mention dizziness etc - you might want to get your blood pressure checked ASAP as that's actually I sign of hypertension.

questions about text services for the deaf people

Of Course the tax dept didn't use relay - the Tax dept has a dedicated TTY line ( so no relay is needed). The issue isn't how you use your TTY. (As a note:using VCO isn't the same as TTY mode at all ... there are phones that only do VCO, and aren't TTYs at all. Your experience is as a VCO...

questions about text services for the deaf people

I know you almost exclusively use your Uniphone for VCO calling, so you're significantly less familiar with how TTY (text) works. I use both the VCO feature and TTY mode on my Uniphone (we have the exact same phone - I've had and used mine since 1995). I also know that you're older and may not...

questions about text services for the deaf people

A reminder (again) that "TEXT" on a TTY is *NOT* a text message like on a cell phone. The only reason the Uniphone has "TEXT" is because it also acts as a hearing phone (typical hearing, or amplified for Hoh). The TEXT mode on the Uniphone switches the Uniphone from "hearing phone" into "TTY...

questions about text services for the deaf people

I use IP (or IM) based relay services on my cell and computer. If you want to use a traditional land line connection then an Ultratex uniphone might be a good option. N.B. If you are hearing with a speech challenge the service you're looking for if you want to be able to hear the other...

    fire alarm flashing lights

I agree - I'd talk with the school in a helpful, non-threatening way first (ie don't storm in threatening to sue!!). A lot of older buildings don't automatically have to upgrade to new codes ... however are willing to do so if someone in the building actually needs the upgrade (accessible...

    Wearing hearing aids to bed

You definitely do not want to wear them to bed. Your ears need to be able to breathe and dry out from wearing the HAs all day (the vents, even "open fit" aren't enough to do this). Wearing the HAs at night will lead to ear infections and likely sores forming in the ear ... not good.

    What GPS is deaf friendly

I have a Garmin Nuvi and it's great. The instructions are clear, and it shows turnoffs in an very visible way. You're not going to find something that does CC or subtitles, but really, my Garmin Nuvi works great (and I've travelled all across the country with it). My model also has the free...

    Hearing infant learning ASL

I'd skip the "baby signs" and just do proper ASL. Infants/toddlers/children will modify the signs as they are able, but at least they're learning something *useful* if you show them ASL

    Learning ASL

Most if not all communities are very welcoming to 'Terps and CODAs - because they live in and understand the culture. I don't really know of very many Hearing People who would be considered a part of the Deaf Community - they may socialize within it, but that's different than being a part of it.

    Ear molds

I have the smallest vent they make - it's the diameter of a pin. I really like it because it makes sure the pressures are regulated, without and acoustical issues (it's not enough to hear anything out of, or cause any feedback at all). I used to have a larger vent, and put the plugs in to...

    best technology for phone/smoke alert?

Sonic Alert makes a number of amazing systems - I've had my Sonic Boom alarm clock for almost 20 years and it still works great (and allows me to "hear" the door, phone, etc). For smoke detectors, a stand alone strobe one works best - Sonic Alert might carry them, or know who does.
