    Start dating again?

Hi Everyone, So it's been a couple of months since I became completely deaf. I'm adjusting as well as you'd expect, and I'm slowly but surely learning ASL. Before I lost my hearing, I was active in the dating world, as you'd expect a girl of my age to be. Naturally when I lost my hearing, I...

    CART gives you headaches?

I have the same situation. I use CART in my college classes and when they go long, I often do get a little bit of a headache. I've found that moving back a bit tends to help a ton - I think the headaches come from being too close. My hearing loss is new, so I am still learning ASL, but plan to...

    New to all of this

Hi Everyone, Just posting a quick update - everything is going well and my asl is improving every day, as i learn more and more. Lip reading is also getting much easier and I am gradually getting used to my new circumstances. Many of the typical social situations that happen in college are...

    New to all of this

Hi everyone! Just a quick update. I am now back at school and its going relatively well. The adjustment is definitely proving to be difficult but I have been really surprised at how accepting and helpful people are. The assistance that school is giving me is great. ASL is also coming along, and...

Thanks so much everyone. It's really great to know that there is such a good, caring support group out there. It makes the adjustment sooooo much easier. I'm slowly but surely starting to accept this reality and focus on getting on with life.

Thanks! I'm coming to realize that it's not the end of the world, but just a different world. You're so right about the technology. I just actually switched my phone to text/data only, and am getting used to watching TV with captions, etc.

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

Hehe that's great! While I'm relatively new to Michigan, surprisingly I get many of the references. Big adjustment going from NYC to Ann Arbor, but I love everything about the school and the area.

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

Thanks. The people at the University of Michigan are being amazing. They're going to have a CART system, as well as a note-taker for me. When I'm ready, they'll also provide an ASL interpreter, but that's a ways off as I'm just starting to learn.

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

I can go into a lot more detail based on what the docs said, but the here's the gist of it:i hit my head on the impact, and it caused severe damage to my cochlear nerve and minor swelling to the facial nerve. The swelling to the facial nerve caused slight facial paralysis, which thank god is...

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

Thanks. So unfortunately, hearing aides won't do anything for me, as I've lost 100% of my hearing. It's just so hard to fathom the fact that about 4 weeks ago, I was a completely normal, hearing, carefree 19 yr old chick on summer vacation from college, and now, fast forward and I'm completely...

    Adjustment to late onset deafness

Hey all, Just a quick update. So I started ASL classes last week. It's going well, but man, it is really hard. It's going to take a long time to learn this, but I know I need to do it (not too many other choices now that I am totally deaf). 2 of my friends and my family (mom, dad, and sister)...

No- I have damage to my facial nerve as well that has caused facial paralysis. That's proving to be easier to deal with. The docs say the facial paralysis is likely temporary.
