    Anyone do Yoga?

I love yoga! Before I went deaf, I was really starting to get into it. I haven't done it much since losing my hearing since it's harder now, but every so often I do practice and love it. Once my ASL is up to snuff I plan on doing it regularly as there are plenty of ASL yoga classes.

    Total Late Deafness and Voice...

Totally late deafened here (lost my hearing about 2 yrs ago in a car accident)... Since going deaf, I have basically gone completely voice-off. I'm just not comfortable with using my voice without knowing how i sound, and I've been told that my voice has really changed. So, I rely purely on...

    deafness as a turn on

As someone who went from perfect hearing to being totally deaf, I have to say this creeps me out. I am all for guys who find me attractive despite my deafness (though to be honest, it's hard to find guys who can see past it!). But for someone to find me attractive soley because I'm deaf...

    Job interviews

So an update - I got a reply back from a company I contacted asking for a phone interview... How do i handle that one? Clearly I'm going to need to let them know that a phone interview won't work in the traditional sense for me. Maybe do it tty? I've only done a tty call once and it was weird...

    Job interviews

Thanks! I am looking for anything related to branding or advertising, or online marketing. I went on my first interview the other day. It went OK, but I definitely think the guy interviewing me was surprised about my deafness (which in all honesty is very apparent the minute you meet more...

    Job interviews

Thanks for the great tips everyone! Sounds like there's really no right or wrong answer - I'm just going to have to give it a try a few ways and see what works. I'm applying for marketing jobs in the NYC area, so there are plenty of opportunities. My biggest fear is how i sound - since my voice...

    Job interviews

Hi All, So as I get ready to graduate college and head into the working world (ahhh!) I am starting to think about job interviews and such. As many of you know, I only recently lost my hearing about 2 years ago. I know that employers can't discriminate based on disability or anything like...

    Best cities for the Deaf

Yeah, I am discovering that... Though I was born and raised here, I never knew about how big the deaf community was until I lost my hearing. Pretty cool as I learn ASL.

    Best cities for the Deaf

I'm from NYC, and go to school in Ann Arbor, MI. I recently lost my hearing, so I am just discovering NYC from the vantage point of being deaf after living here my whole life. It's actually pretty good! While I don't know sign language/ASL yet (though I am learning), I get the sense that the...

How do you know when you've lost your voice?

Agreed - I can feel it in the back of my throat and chest.

    Will my voice change?

I've been told that since I suddenly went deaf about 2 yrs ago, that my voice has changed significantly. I'm told that I don't annunciate as clearly, slur together a lot of my words, my voice is a bit deeper, and I am actually quite hard to understand. Naturally, I have no sense of my pitch or...

Do you think in sign or sound? Has that changed?

I'm recently deaf, but continue to think in terms of sound. I guess it's just a byproduct of having perfect hearing for the vast majority of my life!

    workout?

I try to go to the gym 3-4 times during the week and really do the treadmill, bike, elliptical and occasionally weights. I also try to do spin once a week and yoga once or twice a week. Any other yogis here?

    Speech changing

Hi there, I'm a bit foggy on the medical diagnosis, but I do know for sure that I had cranial VIII damage. I also had some damage to cranial VII which caused some facial paralysis as well, which thankfully has gotten a lot better and is hardly noticeable anymore. I can dig up all of the stuff...

    Speech changing

Sure - To make a long story short, I was in a really bad car accident that basically shattered my cochlear nerve and left me totally deaf. It's been quite an adjustment! -Lauren

    Speech changing

Same thing here. I am basically 100% voice off and rely on texting/notes and such. It works. I've been told that my voice has become more of a monotone and that i slur words together and don't accent properly. Oh well!
