    Language and Literacy

If I remember correctly... An example of an existing language that is used primarily by hearing people that is not based on phonemes, is classical chinese. Classical Chinese is said to be incomprehensible if spoken - it can only be understood if left in its written form, and read from the...

    Language and Literacy

I am fluent in english, and am rapidly becoming fluent in Auslan, however, I can not do "simcom" - the grammatical structures of both languages are just far too different! Even when there are "compatible signs/words", they have nuances that can be quite different. Every attempt to try to...

Anyone here know a sign language NOT ASL?

Auslan here, never learned Signed English, although I was (am?) oral growing up. I don't know ASL, although I'd like to learn.

    Hello! Reintroduction!

I like having subtitles too - helps me learn the ASL signs. :) But that said... When I see subtitles on Auslan videos (Which I now know quite well), I do think it "distracts from the sign language"... With closed captions (as opposed to open captions), you can at least turn them on or...

    Semi-Incoherent, or Deaf?

When it gets really weird is when you have people (typically hearing) who get insulted by you calling yourself "deaf" - they'd prefer you to use "hearing impaired" or something similar. I usually respond "Why do you say I'm hearing impaired?" - to try and force them to actually *think*. (I...

    What makes you happy?

Isn't that how it always works? :) It's good to have a few things you can control, for example, enjoying cooking, finding satisfaction in a job well done, etc.

Australia's First Discrimination Case against a deaf boy

Sad to say this is just the tip of the iceberg... My school was amazing, but the NSW education system on the other hand... At once point, when trying to get films captioned for my english classes, my school was told point blank that "You will not have a deaf child doing advanced english"...

Can't hear, can't sign either - social outcast!

Seconded, well, except for the walking is over-rated part... But I'll spare the "I'd die if I couldn't listen to music/walk on my legs/talk on the phone/blah blah blah" speech that everybody seems to give. :)

Can't hear, can't sign either - social outcast!

Been there, still learning. Just picking up auslan (which is very similar to BSL) from watching other people sign - two years so far and not fluent yet! :( Haven't had a chance to do a proper class, either, but still getting better. Takes a while, you'll get there, and meet a few friends...

Covering of hearing aids with your hair

Oh, oops - I misread into it - "tube" vs "wire"! Yeah, nothing to do with harmonics! :) At some point, you'll loose the signal due to increased resistance, but it's not the same - carry on, pretend I wasn't here!. (Next time I'll read more carefully).
